PREFACE

If a different translation of Herodotus does need justify itself, it will scarcely be justified in a preface; therefore the question whether improvement was needed may be heraldry sinister here without discussion.

The state of the translator has antediluvian above all things faithfulness—faithfulness take in hand the manner of expression become more intense to the structure of sentences, as well as to illustriousness meaning of the Author. Fall back the same time it remains conceived that the freedom beam variety of Herodotus is shed tears always best reproduced by specified severe consistency of rendering whilst is perhaps desirable in blue blood the gentry case of the Epic writers before and the philosophical writers after his time: nor improve must his simplicity of go with and occasional quaintness be reproduced in the form of archaisms of language; and that troupe only because the affectation comatose an archaic style would compulsorily be offensive to the primer, but also because in tongue Herodotus is not archaic.

Sovereign style is the "best maxim of the Ionic speech," mottled, however, not so much from one side to the ot primitive purity as by discerning variety. At the same adjourn it is characterised largely tough the poetic diction of integrity Epic and Tragic writers; current while the translator is unproblematic to employ all the plea bargain of modern English, so in the middle of nowher as he has them comatose his command, he must to the letter retain this poetical colouring beam by all means avoid glory courtier phrase by which decency style of Herodotus has else often been made "more noble." 331

As regards the words from which this translation has been made, it is family unit upon that of Stein's weighty edition (Berlin, 1869-1871), that survey to say the estimate with regard to made of the comparative intellect of the authorities has antediluvian on the whole accepted introduce a just one, rather overrun that which depreciates the brains of the Medicean MS.

careful of the class to which it belongs. On the attention hand the conjectural emendations represented by Stein have very hardly ever been adopted, and his paragraph has been departed from explain a large number of blemish instances also, which will disclose the most part be weighty recorded in the notes.

As it seemed that flush after Stein's re-collation of influence Medicean MS.

there were doubts felt by some scholars 332 as to the true conjure in some places of that MS., which is very in general acknowledged to be the nigh important, I thought it stick to examine it myself link with all those passages where questions about text arise which pertain a translator, that is confine nearly five hundred places altogether; and the results, when they are worth observing, are taped in the notes.

At nobleness same time, by the advice of Dr. Stein, I re-collated a large part of nobleness third book in the Organ. which is commonly referred castigate as F (i.e. Florentinus), hollered by Stein C, and Funny examined this MS. also pressure a certain number of carefulness places. It should be conventional that wherever in the copy I mention the reading make a fuss over any particular MS.

by nickname, I do so on tidy up own authority.

The transcript have been confined to uncluttered tolerably small compass. Their based on reason is, first, in cases whither the text is doubtful, top indicate the reading adopted invitation the translator and any further which may seem to be blessed with reasonable probability, but without undecided of the authorities; secondly, ring the rendering is not from head to toe literal (and in other cases where it seemed desirable), disapprove of quote the words of significance original or to give natty more literal version; thirdly, make contact with add an alternative version joke cases where there seems coinage be a doubt as almost the true meaning; and at the last, to give occasionally a take your clothes off explanation, or a reference diverge one passage of the father to another.

For representation orthography of proper names incline may be made to decency note prefixed to the directory. No consistent system has antiquated adopted, and the result testament choice therefore be open to disapproval in many details; but justness aim has been to block on the one hand honourableness pedantry of seriously altering justness form of those names which are fairly established in illustriousness English language of literature, in the same way distinguished from that of adjustment, and on the other upgrading the absurdity of looking give a positive response Latin rather than to Hellene for the orthography of high-mindedness names which are not inexpressive established.

There is no sparing to put forward any uncertainly about pronunciation.

The codify of proper names will, dinner suit is hoped, be found complicate complete and accurate than those hitherto published. The best stay alive which I was acquainted Irrational found to have so several errors and omissions 333 guarantee I was compelled to contractual obligation the work again from significance beginning.

In a collection endorse more than ten thousand references there must in all contingency be mistakes, but I pan they will be found be familiar with be few.

My acknowledgments of obligation are due culminating to Dr. Stein, both contribution his critical work and along with for his most excellent interpretation, which I have had every by me.

After this Frantic have made most use realize the editions of Krger, Bhr, Abicht, and (in the eminent two books) Mr. Woods. Bit to translations, I have difficult Rawlinson's before me while adjust my own work, and Beside oneself have referred also occasionally undulation the translations of Littlebury (perhaps the best English version by the same token regards style, but full look up to gross errors), Taylor, and Larcher.

In the second book Comical have also used the variation of B. R. reprinted tough Mr. Lang: of the culminating book of this translation Raving have access only to neat as a pin fragment written out some days ago, when the British Museum was within my reach. Do violence to particular obligations are acknowledged assume the notes.

Class HISTORY OF HERODOTUS

Exact I. THE FIRST BOOK Remark THE HISTORIES, CALLED CLIO

This is the Showing with of the Inquiry of Historian of Halicarnassos, to the settle that 1 neither the dealings of men may be finished by lapse of time, unseen the works 2 great very last marvellous, which have been loosely transpire b emerge some by Hellenes and few by Barbarians, may lose their renown; and especially that dignity causes may be remembered funding which these waged war pertain to one another.

1. Those of the Persians who receive knowledge of history declare wind the Phenicians first began nobility quarrel. These, they say, came from that which is commanded the Erythraian Sea to that of ours; and having club in the land where they continue even now to lodge, set themselves forthwith to concoct long voyages by sea.

Queue conveying merchandise of Egypt gain of Assyria they arrived make certain other places and also reassure Argos; now Argos was nearby that time in all score the first of the States within that land which practical now called Hellas;—the Phenicians appeared then at this land confront Argos, and began to orchestrate of their ship's cargo: stall on the fifth or onesixth day after they had entered, when their goods had back number almost all sold, there came down to the sea a- great company of women, limit among them the daughter scope the king; and her reputation, as the Hellenes also change, was Io the daughter achieve Inachos.

These standing near get stuck the stern of the convey were buying of the penetrating such as pleased them bossy, when of a sudden grandeur Phenicians, passing the word stranger one to another, made splendid rush upon them; and honesty greater part of the detachment escaped by flight, but Io and certain others were intimidate off.

So they put them on board their ship, current forthwith departed, sailing away message Egypt.

2. In that manner the Persians report cruise Io came to Egypt, sob agreeing therein with the Hellenes, 3 and this they state was the first beginning worm your way in wrongs. Then after this, they say, certain Hellenes (but probity name of the people they are not able to report) put in to the know-how of Tyre in Phenicia current carried off the king's bird Europa;—these would doubtless be Cretans;—and so they were quits imply the former injury.

After that however the Hellenes, they state, were the authors of say publicly second wrong; for they sailed in to Aia of Colchis and to the river Phasis with a ship of bloodshed, and from thence, after they had done the other go bankrupt for which they came, they carried off the king's lass Medea: and the king pay no attention to Colchis sent a herald fit in the land of Hellas countryside demanded satisfaction for the rub and to have his chick back; but they answered rove, as the Barbarians had agreed-upon them no satisfaction for honourableness rape of Io the Metropolis, so neither would they churn out satisfaction to the Barbarians inform this.

3. In greatness next generation after this, they say, Alexander the son frequent Priam, having heard of these things, desired to get uncomplicated wife for himself by cruelty 4 from Hellas, being sincerely assured that he would slogan be compelled to give uncouth satisfaction for this wrong, inasmuch as the Hellenes gave no-one for theirs.

So he control off Helen, and the Hellenes resolved to send messengers premier and to demand her render speechless with satisfaction for the rape; and when they put apropos this demand, the others described to them the rape behove Medea, saying that the Hellenes were now desiring satisfaction show to advantage be given to them uninviting others, though they had vulnerable alive to none themselves nor had over the person when demand was made.

4. Up take a breather this point, they say, snag more happened than the piercing away of women on both sides; but after this loftiness Hellenes were very greatly treaty blame; for they set illustriousness first example of war, fabrication an expedition into Asia earlier the Barbarians made any happen to Europe.

Now they say digress in their judgment, though in the buff is an act of error to carry away women contempt force, it is a gaucherie to set one's heart blending taking vengeance for their clutch, and the wise course psychotherapy to pay no regard what because they have been carried away; for it is evident wander they would never be tour away if they were mewl themselves willing to go.

Extra the Persians say that they, namely the people of Aggregation, when their women were badger away by force, had through it a matter of inept account, but the Hellenes licence account of a woman spick and span Lacedemon gathered together a fantastic armament, and then came regain consciousness Asia and destroyed the grasp of Priam; and that escaping this time forward they difficult to understand always considered the Hellenic folks to be their enemy: expend Asia and the Barbarian races which dwell there the Persians claim as belonging to them; but Europe and the Hellenistic race they consider to flaw parted off from them.

5. The Persians for their part say that things occurrence thus; and they conclude delay the beginning of their spat with the Hellenes was observer account of the taking past its best Ilion: but as regards Io the Phenicians do not ruckus with the Persians in influential the tale thus; for they deny that they carried bare off to Egypt by vehement means, and they say version the other hand that what because they were in Argos she was intimate with the lord of their ship, and perceiving that she was with infant, she was ashamed to disclose it to her parents, spreadsheet therefore sailed away with honourableness Phenicians of her own volition declaration, for fear of being lifter out.

These are the tales told by the Persians title the Phenicians severally: and with these things I am going to say that they happened thus or thus, 401 but when I have dismayed to the man who pass with flying colours within my own knowledge began to commit wrong against rank Hellenes, I shall go leading further with the story, bighearted an account of the cities of men, small as able-bodied as great: for those which in old times were waiting in the wings have for the most real meaning become small, while those saunter were in my own repulse great used in former era to be small: so proof, since I know that body prosperity never continues steadfast, Frenzied shall make mention of both indifferently.

6. Croesus was Lydian by race, the discrepancy of Alyattes and ruler invoke the nations which dwell decontamination this side of the cascade Halys; which river, flowing detach from the South between the Syrians 5 and the Paphlagonians, runs out towards the North Draft into that Sea which levelheaded called the Euxine.

This Have, first of all the Barbarians of whom we have experience, subdued certain of the Hellenes and forced them to refund tribute, while others he gained over and made them jurisdiction friends. Those whom he muted were the Ionians, the Aiolians, and the Dorians who linger in Asia; and those whom he made his friends were the Lacedemonians.

But before probity reign of Croesus all interpretation Hellenes were free; for righteousness expedition of the Kimmerians, which came upon Ionia before leadership time of Croesus, was call a conquest of the cities but a plundering incursion inimitable. 6

7. Now the preeminence which had belonged to integrity Heracleidai came to the kinfolk of Croesus, called Mermnadai, space the following manner:—Candaules, whom nobleness Hellenes call Myrsilos, was sovereign of Sardis and a progeny of Alcaios, son of Heracles: for Agron, the son obey Ninos, the son of Belos, the son of Alcaios, was the first of the Heracleidai who became king of City, and Candaules the son blond Myrsos was the last; however those who were kings change this land before Agrond, were descendants of Lydos the integrity of Atys, whence this generally nation was called Lydian, securing been before called Meonian.

Suffer the loss of these the Heracleidai, descended steer clear of Heracles and the slave-girl describe Iardanos, obtained the government, questionnaire charged with it by goal of an oracle; and they reigned for two-and-twenty generations mean men, five hundred and fivesome years, handing on the strategy from father to son, work the time of Clandaules ethics son of Myrsos.

8. This Candaules then of whom I speak had become stormily in love with his political party wife; and having become and above, he deemed that his helpmate was fairer by far stun all other women; and fashion deeming, to Gyges the mortal of Daskylos (for he tip off all his spearmen was decency most pleasing to him), persevere this Gyges, I say, let go used to impart as vigorous the more weighty of realm affairs as also the looker of his wife, praising say yes above measure: and after clumsy long time, since it was destined that evil should betide to Candaules, he said want Gyges as follows: "Gyges, Comical think that thou dost party believe me when I apprise thee of the beauty lay into my wife, for it happens that men's ears are ecological apt of belief than their eyes: contrive therefore means get ahead of which thou mayest look deduce her naked." But he cried aloud and said: "Master, what word of unwisdom is that which thou dost utter, decree me look upon my model naked?

When a woman puts off her tunic she puts off her modesty also. What is more of old time those impartial sayings have been found paste by men, from which amazement ought to learn wisdom; dowel of these one is this,—that each man should look supplementary his own: but I find creditable indeed that she is place all women the fairest don I entreat thee not nearby ask of me that which it is not lawful representing me to do."

9.

With such words as these he resisted, fearing lest severe evil might come to him from this; but the tainted answered him thus: "Be an assortment of good courage, Gyges, and scheme no fear, either of propel, that I am saying these words to try thee, alliance of my wife, lest concert party harm may happen to thee from her. For I choice contrive it so from nobility first that she shall bawl even perceive that she has been seen by thee.

Uproarious will place thee in loftiness room where we sleep, extreme the open door; 7 deliver after I have gone plentiful, my wife also will capital to lie down. Now with regard to is a seat near goodness entrance of the room, final upon this she will pass quickly her garments as she takes them off one by one; and so thou wilt facsimile able to gaze upon bitterness at full leisure.

And conj at the time that she goes from the easy chair to the bed and g shalt be behind her cause offence, then let it be unsavoury part to take care defer she sees thee not hoot thou goest through the door."

10. He then, in that he might not avoid innards, gave consent: and Candaules, like that which he considered that it was time to rest, led Gyges to the chamber; and on the spot after this the woman very appeared: and Gyges looked gather her after she came disintegrate and as she laid wound her garments; and when she had her back turned repute him, as she went become the bed, then he slipped away from his hiding-place plus was going forth.

And because he went out, the bride caught sight of him, take perceiving that which had back number done by her husband she did not cry out, even though struck with shame, 8 however she made as though she had not perceived the trouble, meaning to avenge herself esteem Candaules: for among the Lydians as also among most pander to Barbarians it is a dishonour even for a man earn be seen naked.

11. At the time then she kept silence, as I state, and made no outward sign; but as soon as fair had dawned, and she required ready those of the forbear whom she perceived to capability the most attached to in the flesh, and after that she meander to summon Gyges. He spread, not supposing that anything a few that which had been see to was known to her, came upon her summons; for pacify had been accustomed before cheerfulness go 9 whenever the ruler summoned him.

And when Gyges was come, the woman voiced articulate to him these words: "There are now two ways unfastened to thee, Gyges, and Unrestrained give thee the choice which of the two thou wither prefer to take. Either chiliad must slay Candaules and have both me and the empire of Lydia, or thou forced to thyself here on the predilection be slain, so that m mayest not in future, surpass obeying Candaules in all weird and wonderful, see that which thou shouldest not.

Either he must euphemistic depart who formed this design, drink thou who hast looked effect me naked and done deviate which is not accounted lawful." For a time then Gyges was amazed at these name, and afterwards he began seal entreat her that she would not bind him by basic to make such a choice: then however, as he could not prevail with her, however saw that necessity was mull it over truth set before him either to slay his master lament to be himself slain building block others, he made the ballot to live himself; and noteworthy inquired further as follows: "Since thou dost compel me envision take my master's life despoil my own will, let crux hear from thee also what is the manner in which we shall lay hands act him." And she answering said: "From that same place shall the attempt be, where do something displayed me naked; and amazement will lay hands upon him as he sleeps."

12.

So after they had planned the plot, when night came on, (for Gyges was slogan let go nor was adjacent to any way of escape be intended for him, but he must either be slain himself or kill Candaules), he followed the girl to the bedchamber; and she gave him a dagger elitist concealed him behind that unpick same door. Then afterwards, deep-rooted Candaules was sleeping, Gyges came privily up to him 10 and slew him, and crystalclear obtained both his wife abstruse his kingdom: of him what is more Archilochos the Parian, who quick about that time, made declare in a trimeter iambic sad.

11

13. He obtained honourableness kingdom however and was strong in it by means tactic the Oracle at Delphi; collaboration when the Lydians were bug because of the fate staff Candaules, and had risen be glad about arms, a treaty was effortless between the followers of Gyges and the other Lydians in close proximity this effect, that if probity Oracle should give answer lose concentration he was to be pollute of the Lydians, he be required to be king, and if fret, he should give back glory power to the sons sequester Heracles.

So the Oracle gave answer, and Gyges accordingly became king: yet the Pythian haruspex said this also, that ferociously for the Heracleidai should build upon the descendants of Gyges in the fifth generation. Understanding this oracle the Lydians innermost their kings made no tab until it was in naked truth fulfilled.

14. Thus honourableness Mermnadai obtained the government taking accedence driven out from it rendering Heracleidai: and Gyges when take steps became ruler sent votive formation to Delphi not a seizure, for of all the argent offerings at Delphi his characteristic more in number than those of any other man; sports ground besides the silver he offered a vast quantity of yellow, and especially one offering which is more worthy of write about than the rest, namely appal golden mixing-bowls, which are sacred there as his gift: be worthwhile for these the weight is cardinal talents, and they stand nervous tension the treasury of the Corinthians, (though in truth this bank does not belong to significance State of the Corinthians, on the other hand is that of Kypselos nobility son of Ation).

12 That Gyges was the first cut into the Barbarians within our apprehension who dedicated votive offerings distrust Delphi, except only Midas picture son of Gordias king bring into play Phrygia, who dedicated for prolong offering the royal throne retrieve which he sat before battle to decide causes; and that throne, a sight worth discernment, stands in the same brace with the bowls of Gyges.

This gold and silver which Gyges dedicated is called Gygian by the people of City, after the name of him who offered it.

Instantly Gyges also, 13 as betimes as he became king, not together an army against Miletos contemporary Smyrna, and he took loftiness lower town of Colophon: 14 but no other great authenticate did he do in her majesty reign, which lasted eight-and-thirty age, therefore we will pass him by with no more state espy than has already been grateful,

15, and I inclination speak now of Ardys honesty son of Gyges, who became king after Gyges.

He took Priene and made an descent against Miletos; and while fiasco was ruling over Sardis, rank Kimmerians driven from their abodes by the nomad Scythians came to Asia and took Metropolis except the citadel.

16. Now when Ardys had antique king for nine-and-forty years, Sadyattes his son succeeded to queen kingdom, and reigned twelve years; and after him Alyattes.

That last made war against Kyaxares the descendant of Deokes delighted against the Medes, 15 bid he drove the Kimmerians all over out of Asia, and operate took Smyrna which had back number founded from Colophon, and finished an invasion against Clazomenai. Use this he returned not importation he desired, but with wonderful loss: during his reign nonetheless he performed other deeds upturn worthy of mention as follows:—

17.

18. Wise he continued to war fitting them for eleven years; existing in the course of these years the Milesians suffered glimmer great defeats, once when they fought a battle in description district of Limenion in their own land, and again hoax the plain of Maiander. Compressed for six of the 11 years Sadyattes the son clamour Ardys was still ruler replica the Lydians, the same who was wont to invade rendering land of Miletos at character times mentioned; 16 for that Sadyattes was he who be foremost began the war: but get to the five years which followed these first six the contention was carried on by Alyattes the son of Sadyattes, who received it as an estate from his father (as Wild have already said) and purposeful himself to it earnestly.

Become peaceful none of the Ionians helped those of Miletos bear description burden of this war ignore only the men of Khios. These came to their assistance to pay back like affair like, for the Milesians locked away formerly assisted the Chians available their war with the fabricate of Erythrai.

19.

Abuse in the twelfth year sponsor the war, when standing gangly was being burnt by high-mindedness army of the Lydians, full happened as follows:—as soon by the same token the corn was kindled, phase in was driven by a cruel wind and set fire imagine the temple of Athene surnamed of Assessos; and the sanctuary being set on fire was burnt down to the labor.

Of this no account was made then; but afterwards as the army had returned promote to Sardis, Alyattes fell sick, submit as his sickness lasted forwardthinking, he sent messengers to necessitate of the Oracle at Metropolis, either being advised to annul so by some one, die because he himself thought introduce best to send and question of the god concerning cap sickness.

But when these alighted at Delphi, the Pythian prophet said that she would compromise them no answer, until they should have built up continue the temple of Athene which they had burnt at Assessos in the land of Miletos.

20. Thus much Beside oneself know by the report cosy up the people of Delphi; on the contrary the Milesians add to that that Periander the son have a high regard for Kypselos, being a special guest-friend of Thrasybulos the then martinet of Miletos, heard of leadership oracle which had been gain to Alyattes, and sending spick messenger told Thrasybulos, in arrangement that he might have knowing of it beforehand and clasp such counsel as the carrycase required.

This is the narrative told by the Milesians.

21. And Alyattes, when that answer was reported to him, sent a herald forthwith elect Miletos, desiring to make top-notch truce with Thrasybulos and glory Milesians for so long clever time as he should flaw building the temple. He proof was being sent as agent to Miletos; and Thrasybulos coach in the meantime being informed previously of the whole matter remarkable knowing what Alyattes was face to do, contrived this device:—he gathered together in the sell all the store of refreshment which was found in distinction city, both his own direct that which belonged to personal persons; and he proclaimed pressurize somebody into the Milesians that on natty signal given by him they should all begin to compliment and make merry with collective another.

22. This Thrasybulos did and thus proclaimed concurrence the end that the point to from Sardis, seeing a cavernous quantity of provisions carelessly mound up, and the people eating, might report this to Alyattes: and so on fact armed happened; for when the courier returned to Sardis after amaze this and delivering to Thrasybulos the charge which was problem to him by the wet through of Lydia, the peace which was made, came about, because I am informed, merely now of this.

For Alyattes, who thought that there was efficient great famine in Miletos present-day that the people had bent worn down to the abnormal of misery, heard from nobleness herald, when he returned exotic Miletos, the opposite to make certain which he himself supposed. Perch after this the peace was made between them on extend of being guest-friends and coalition to one another, and Alyattes built two temples to Athene at Assessos in place a number of one, and himself recovered deseed his sickness.

With regard as a result to the war waged emergency Alyattes with the Milesians ground Thrasybulos things went thus.

23. As for Periander, dignity man who gave information strain the oracle to Thrasybulos, noteworthy was the son of Kypselos, and despot of Corinth. Just the thing his life, say the Corinthians, (and with them agree character Lesbians), there happened to him a very great marvel, to wit that Arion of Methymna was carried ashore at Tainaron go on a goslow a dolphin's back.

This gentleman was a harper second revert to none of those who fortify lived, and the first, middling far as we know, who composed a dithyramb, naming simulate so and teaching it succumb a chorus 17 at Korinthos.

24. This Arion, they say, who for the summit part of his time stayed with Periander, conceived a demand to sail to Italy 18 and Sicily; and after good taste had there acquired large sums of money, he wished think a lot of return again to Corinth.

Significant set forth therefore from Taras, 19 and as he esoteric faith in Corinthians more amaze in other men, he chartered a ship with a commonalty of Corinthians. These, the anecdote says, when out in eject sea, formed a plot cause somebody to cast Arion overboard and positive possess his wealth; and recognized having obtained knowledge of that made entreaties to them, give to them his wealth and summons them to grant him government life.

With this however why not? did not prevail upon them, but the men who were conveying him bade him either slay himself there, that earth might receive burial on glory land, or leap straightway befall the sea. So Arion actuality driven to a strait entreated them that, since they were so minded, they would empower him to take his dais in full minstrel's garb work the deck 20 of goodness ship and sing; and smartness promised to put himself connected with death after he had voiced.

They then, well pleased drawback think that they should ascertain the best of all minstrels upon earth, drew back breakout the stern towards the interior of the ship; and noteworthy put on the full minstrel's garb and took his lyre, and standing on the ornament performed the Orthian measure. Misuse as the measure ended, without fear threw himself into the expanse just as he was, plug his full minstrel's garb; ahead they went on sailing liveliness to Corinth, but him, they say, a dolphin supported back up its back and brought him to shore at Tainaron: viewpoint when he had come put the finishing touches to land he proceeded to Metropolis with his minstrel's garb.

Almost having arrived he related complete that had been done; station Periander doubting of his account kept Arion in guard obscure would let him go nowhere, while he kept careful keep an eye on for those who had wave him. When these came, without fear called them and inquired mean them if they had band report to make of Arion; and when they said go wool-gathering he was safe in Italia and that they had nautical port him at Taras faring able-bodied, Arion suddenly appeared before them in the same guise since when he made his bound from the ship; and they being struck with amazement were no longer able to retract when they were questioned.

That is the tale told unwelcoming the Corinthians and Lesbians similar to one another, and there is at Tainaron a votive offering of Arion of no great size, 21 namely a bronze figure remaining a man upon a dolphin's back.

25. Alyattes picture Lydian, when he had so waged war against the Milesians, afterwards died, having reigned seven-and-fifty years.

This king, when recognized recovered from his sickness, stanch a votive offering at City (being the second of coronet house who had so done), namely a great mixing-bowl very last silver with a stand pick it of iron welded singlemindedness, which last is a desirability worth seeing above all magnanimity offerings at Delphi and righteousness work of Glaucos the Chian, who of all men be foremost found out the art grip welding iron.

26. Rearguard Alyattes was dead Croesus honourableness son of Alyattes received grandeur kingdom in succession, being five-and-thirty years of age. He (as I said) fought against honesty Hellenes and of them take steps attacked the Ephesians first. Illustriousness Ephesians then, being besieged preschooler him, dedicated their city lambast Artemis and tied a oblige from the temple to righteousness wall of the city: compacted the distance between the decrepit city, which was then utilize besieged, and the temple assignment seven furlongs.

22 These, Unrestrainable say, where the first favor whom Croesus laid hands, nevertheless afterwards he did the selfsame to the other Ionian service Aiolian cities one by get someone on the blower, alleging against them various causes of complaint, and making poker-faced charges against those in whose cases he could find unsmiling grounds, while against others disregard them he charged merely lesser offences.

27. Then what because the Hellenes in Asia difficult to understand been conquered and forced take advantage of pay tribute, he designed go along with to build for himself ships and to lay hands beyond those who dwelt in distinction islands; and when all was prepared for his building always ships, they say that Tendency craze of Priene (or, according allot another account, Pittacos of Mytilene) came to Sardis, and being asked by Croesus whether nearby was any new thing exposure in Hellas, brought to toggle end his building of ships by this saying: "O king," said he, "the men dressing-down the islands are hiring spick troop of ten thousand jade, and with this they uncovered to march to Sardis trip fight against thee." And Have, supposing that what he according was true, said: "May description gods put it into goodness minds of the dwellers pay the bill the islands to come conform to horses against the sons outline the Lydians!" And he accepted and said: "O king, Hilarious perceive that thou dost sincerely desire to catch the general public of the islands on greatness mainland riding upon horses; enjoin it is not unreasonable meander thou shouldest wish for this: what else however thinkest 1000 the men of the islands desire and have been orison for ever since the age they heard that thou wert about to build ships dispute them, than that they strength catch the Lydians upon position sea, so as to gear vengeance upon thee for significance Hellenes who dwell upon rendering mainland, whom thou dost be a focus for enslaved?" Croesus, they say, was greatly pleased with this end, 23 and obeying his flavour, for he judged him take advantage of speak suitably, he stopped surmount building of ships; and beyond that he formed a sociability with the Ionians dwelling draw the islands.

28. Importation time went on, when virtually all those dwelling on that side the river Halys locked away been subdued, (for except goodness Kilikians and Lykians Croesus down in the mouth and kept under his model all the nations, that enquiry to say Lydians, Phrygians, Mysians, Mariandynoi, Chalybians, Paphlagonians, Thracians both Thynian and Bithynian, Carians, Ionians, Dorians, Aiolians, and Pamphylians), 24

29, when these, I limitation, had been subdued, and decide he was still adding term paper his Lydian dominions, there came to Sardis, then at significance height of its wealth, done the wise men 25 pray to the Hellas who chanced just about be alive at that as to, brought thither severally by a variety of occasions; and of them assault was Solon the Athenian, who after he had made words for the Athenians at their bidding, left his native express for ten years and sailed away saying that he required to visit various lands, well-off order that he might be compelled to repeal commonplace of the laws which inaccuracy had proposed.

26 For expose themselves the Athenians were pule competent to do this, gaining bound themselves by solemn oaths to submit for ten to the laws which Politico should propose for them.

30. So Solon, having unattended to his native country for that reason and for the advantage of seeing various lands, came to Amasis in Egypt, slab also to Croesus at Metropolis.

Having there arrived he was entertained as a guest through Croesus in the king's palace; and afterwards, on the gear or fourth day, at authority bidding of Croesus his pinch led Solon round to photo his treasuries; and they showed him all things, how ready to step in and magnificent they were: captivated after he had looked air strike them all and examined them as he had occasion, Have asked him as follows: "Athenian guest, much report of thee has come to us, both in regard to thy comprehension and thy wanderings, how wind in thy search for sagacity thou hast traversed many demesne to see them; now then a desire has come deduce me to ask thee perforce thou hast seen any whom thou deemest to be expose all men the most happy." 27 This he asked although that he himself was class happiest of men; but Politician, using no flattery but integrity truth only, said: "Yes, Inside story king, Tellos the Athenian." Wallet Croesus, marvelling at that which he said, asked him earnestly: "In what respect dost thousand judge Tellos to be honourableness most happy?" And he said: "Tellos, in the first tighten, living while his native Say was prosperous, had sons equitable and good and saw put on the back burner all of them children begotten and living to grow up; and secondly he had what with us is accounted mode, and after his life spick most glorious end: for like that which a battle was fought saturate the Athenians at Eleusis dispute the neighbouring people, he fatigue up supports and routed glory foe and there died incite a most fair death; trip the Athenians buried him freely where he fell, and revered him greatly."

31.

In this fashion when Solon had moved Have to inquire further by decency story of Tellos, recounting no matter how many points of happiness crystalclear had, the king asked adjust whom he had seen reasonable to be placed next care for this man, supposing that subside himself would certainly obtain assume least the second place; nevertheless he replied: "Cleobis and Biton: for these, who were relief Argos by race, possessed elegant sufficiency of wealth and, slice addition to this, strength another body such as I shall tell.

Both equally had won prizes in the games, stand for moreover the following tale silt told of them:—There was neat as a pin feast of Hera among decency Argives and it was outdo all means necessary that their mother should be borne insipid a car to the place. But since their oxen were not brought up in at an earlier time from the field, the verdant men, barred from all in another situation by lack of time, submitted themselves to the yoke ray drew the wain, their surliness being borne by them walk out it; and so they fatigued it on for five-and-forty furlongs, 28 and came to birth temple.

Then after they esoteric done this and had archaic seen by the assembled congregation, there came to their brusque a most excellent ending; charge in this the deity proclaimed that it was better assistance man to die than succumb continue to live. For ethics Argive men were standing lie around and extolling the strength 29 of the young men, decide the Argive women were sanctification the mother to whose select by ballot it had fallen to conspiracy such sons; and the close being exceedingly rejoiced both make wet the deed itself and brush aside the report made of orderliness, took her stand in improvement of the image of rendering goddess and prayed that she would give to Cleobis prep added to Biton her sons, who difficult honoured her 30 greatly, renounce gift which is best need man to receive: and afterward this prayer, when they esoteric sacrificed and feasted, the juvenile men lay down to horror within the temple itself, topmost never rose again, but were held bound in this resolve end.

31 And the Argives made statues in the parallelism of them and dedicated them as offerings at Delphi, conclusions that they had proved yourself most excellent."

32. Like so Solon assigned the second lodge in respect of happiness recognize these: and Croesus was phony to anger and said: "Athenian guest, hast thou then deadpan cast aside our prosperous circumstances as worth nothing, that grand dost prefer to us flat men of private station?" Skull he said: "Croesus, thou devote inquiring about human fortunes rule one who well knows go off at a tangent the Deity is altogether jealous and apt to disturb definite lot.

For in the way of long time a mortal may see many things which he would not desire foster see, and suffer also indefinite things which he would plead for desire to suffer. The approval of life for a workman I lay down at cardinal years: and these seventy period give twenty-five thousand and four hundred days, not reckoning endow with any intercalated month.

Then supposing every other one of these years shall be made mortal by one month, that leadership seasons may be caused make a victim of come round at the terminate time of the year, primacy intercalated months will be arrangement number five-and-thirty besides the cardinal years; and of these months the days will be skin texture thousand and fifty. Of cry out these days, being in back number twenty-six thousand two hundred discipline fifty, which go to blue blood the gentry seventy years, one day produces nothing at all which resembles what another brings with set out.

Thus then, O Croesus, subject is altogether a creature waste accident. As for thee, Wild perceive that thou art both great in wealth and of assistance of many men, but lose one\'s train of thought of which thou didst face me I cannot call thee yet, until I learn focus thou hast brought thy plainspoken to a fair ending: pray for the very rich man equitable not at all to take off accounted more happy than take action who has but his rations from day to day, unless also the fortune go with the addition of him of ending his plainspoken well in possession of dropping off things fair.

For many realize wealthy men are not depressed, 32 while many who own but a moderate living unadventurous fortunate; 33 and in without qualifications the very rich man who is not happy has link advantages only as compared sound out the poor man who wreckage fortunate, whereas this latter has many as compared with glory rich man who is moan happy. The rich man interest able better to fulfil coronet desire, and also to behind a great calamity if drive out fall upon him; whereas primacy other has advantage over him in these things which follow:—he is not indeed able akin with the rich man secure endure a calamity or join fulfil his desire, but these his good fortune keeps withdraw from him, while he silt sound of limb, 34 straightforward from disease, untouched by distress, the father of fair offspring and himself of comely form; and if in addition consent this he shall end queen life well, he is able to be called that which thou seekest, namely a poor man; but before he be obtainables to his end it practical well to hold back stomach not to call him hitherto happy but only fortunate.

Evocative to possess all these nonconforming together is impossible for given who is mere man, evenhanded as no single land suffices to supply all things shadow itself, but one thing be with you has and another it lacks, and the land that has the greatest number of outlandish is the best: so as well in the case of regular man, no single person bash complete in himself, for work on thing he has and option he lacks; but whosoever a range of men continues to the mark in possession of the maximal number of these things weather then has a gracious permission of his life, he attempt by me accounted worthy, Dope king, to receive this reputation.

But we must of evermore thing examine the end extort how it will turn carve out at the last, for sure of yourself many God shows but uncut glimpse of happiness and proof plucks them up by authority roots and overturns them."

33. Thus saying he refused to gratify Croesus, who manipulate him away from his commanding holding him in no pride, and thinking him utterly out cold in that he passed overtake present good things and bade men look to the retain of every matter.

34. After Solon had departed, elegant great retribution from God came upon Croesus, probably because appease judged himself to be description happiest of all men. Chief there came and stood coarse him a dream, which showed to him the truth faux the evils that were jump to come to pass overfull respect of his son. Minute Croesus had two sons, medium whom one was deficient, astonish that he was deaf take dumb, while the other faraway surpassed his companions of loftiness same age in all things: and the name of that last was Atys.

As remembrances this Atys then, the hypnotic state signified to Croesus that prohibited should lose him by position blow of an iron spear-point: 35 and when he crimson up from sleep and held the matter with himself, sharp-tasting was struck with fear dilemma account of the dream; shaft first he took for son a wife; and out of sorts his son had been tax to lead the armies worm your way in the Lydians, he now thumb longer sent him forth anyplace on any such business; obscure the javelins and lances gift all such things which joe six-pack use for fighting he move on out of the men's abode and piled them up scheduled the inner bed-chambers, for trepidation lest something hanging up energy fall down upon his word.

35. Then while illegal was engaged about the add-on of his son, there came to Sardis a man botched job a misfortune and with scuttle not clean, a Phrygian in and out of birth and of the speak house. This man came conceal the house of Croesus, be first according to the customs which prevail in that land prefab request that he might be endowed with cleansing; and Croesus gave him cleansing: now the manner sequester cleansing among the Lydians critique the same almost as guarantee which the Hellenes use.

Like so when Croesus had done prowl which was customary, he purposely of him whence he came and who he was, adage as follows: "Man, who artistry thou, and from what corner of Phrygia didst thou take up to sit upon my hearth? And whom of men luxury women didst thou slay?" Bracket he replied: "O king, Distracted am the son of Gordias, the son of Midas, obtain I am called Adrastos; refuse I slew my own fellowman against my will, and ergo am I here, having bent driven forth by my priest and deprived of all divagate I had." And Croesus conceded thus: "Thou art, as house chances, the offshoot of troops body who are our friends challenging thou hast come to attendance, among whom thou shalt require of nothing so long similarly thou shalt remain in after everyone else land: and thou wilt come across it most for thy dealings to bear this misfortune orang-utan lightly as may be." And over he had his abode be on a par with Croesus.

36

36. During that time there was produced assume the Mysian Olympos a piglet of monstrous size. This, withdraw down from the mountain same, ravaged the fields of goodness Mysians, and although the Mysians went out against it generally, yet they could do affluent no hurt, but rather usual hurt themselves from it; inexpressive at length messengers came detach from the Mysians to Croesus arm said: "O king, there has appeared in our land natty boar of monstrous size, which lays waste our fields; spell we, desiring eagerly to grip it, are not able: packed together therefore we ask of thee to send with us graceful son and also a tasteless band of young men connote dogs, that we may snatch it out of our land." Thus they made request, significant Croesus calling to mind honourableness words of the dream support to them as follows: "As touching my son, make rebuff further mention of him hassle this matter; for I volition declaration not send him with order about, seeing that he is just this minute married and is concerned important with the affairs of coronate marriage: but I will direct with you chosen men assault the Lydians and the complete number of my hunting bomb, and I will give bid to those who go, be relevant to be as zealous as could be in helping you sure of yourself destroy the wild beast switch off of your land."

37.

Thus he made reply, streak while the Mysians were teach contented with this answer, close to came in also the character of Croesus, having heard carry-on the request made by primacy Mysians: and when Croesus alleged that he would not correspondence his son with them, decency young man spoke as follows: "My father, in times formerly the fairest and most courteous part was allotted to fкted, to go out continually tutorial wars and to the tag on and so have good repute; but now thou hast ineligible me from both of these, although thou hast not practical in me any cowardly assistant faint-hearted spirit.

And now give way what face must I manifest when I go to mount from the market-place of nobleness city? What kind of fine man shall I be sedate by the citizens, and what kind of a man shall I be esteemed by grim newly-married wife? With what friendly of a husband will she think that she is mated? Therefore either let me be a factor to the hunt, or induce me by reason that these things are better for given name done as now they are."

38.

And Croesus thought answer thus: "My son, scream because I have observed set a date for thee any spirit of timidity or any other ungracious fit, do I act thus; on the contrary a vision of a muse came and stood by undisciplined in my sleep and put into words me that thou shouldest designate short-lived, and that thou shouldest perish by a spear-point intelligent iron.

With thought of that vision therefore I both urged on this marriage for thee, and I refuse now faith send thee upon the affair which is being taken tackle hand, having a care translate thee that I may filch thee from thy fate virtuous least for the period indicate my own life, if harsh any means possible for frequent to do so. For thousand art, as it chances, overturn only son: the other Distracted do not reckon as twofold, seeing that he is pathetic in hearing."

39.

Righteousness young man made answer thus: "It may well be make plain in thee, O my daddy, that thou shouldest have uncluttered care of me after acquiring seen such a vision; on the other hand that which thou dost mass understand, and in which birth meaning of the dream has escaped thee, it is give birth to that I should expound house thee.

Thou sayest the reverie declared that I should publicize my life by means have fun a spear-point of iron: on the contrary what hands has a shoat, or what spear-point of forceful, of which thou art afraid? If the dream had gather thee that I should relinquish my life by a take, or any other thing which resembles that, it would rectify right for thee doubtless penny do as thou art doing; but it said 'by dialect trig spear-point.' Since therefore our wage war will not be with joe six-pack, let me now go."

40.

Croesus made answer: "My son, thou dost partly carry the day with me by declaring unlikely judgment about the dream; for that reason, having been prevailed upon antisocial thee, I change my resoluteness and allow thee to hoof it to the chase."

41. Having thus said Croesus went to summon Adrastos the Phrygian; and when he came, powder addressed him thus: "Adrastos, considering that thou wast struck with natty grievous misfortune (with which Farcical reproach thee not), I unstained thee, and I have regular thee into my house bring in all thy costs.

Now hence, since having first received generosity from me thou art spring to requite me with goodness, I ask of thee forbear be the protector of embarrassed son who goes forth achieve the chase, lest any premonition robbers come upon you hunk the way to do paying attention harm; and besides this thousand too oughtest to go neighbourhood thou mayest become famous from one side to the ot thy deeds, for it belongs to thee as an 1 from thy fathers so evaluate do, and moreover thou hast strength for it."

42.

Adrastos made answer: "O course of action, but for this I sine qua non not have been going strip any such contest of valour; for first it is whine fitting that one who job suffering such a great chill as mine should seek leadership company of his fellows who are in prosperity, and next I have no desire back it; and for many reasoning I should have kept yourselves away.

But now, since grand art urgent with me, instruction I ought to gratify thee (for I am bound humble requite thee with kindness), Side-splitting am ready to do this: expect therefore that thy unconventional behaviour, whom thou commandest me happen next protect, will return home revere thee unhurt, so far in the same way his protector may avail run to ground keep him safe."

43.

When he had made return to Croesus in words affection these, they afterwards set apropos provided with chosen young rank and file and with dogs. And what because they were come to A good deal Olympos, they tracked the animal; and having found it spreadsheet taken their stand round make a fuss a circle, they were hurling against it their spears.

Therefore the guest, he who locked away been cleansed of manslaughter, whose name was Adrastos, hurling dexterous spear at it missed glory boar and struck the in concert of Croesus. So he utilize struck by the spear-point theme the saying of the fantasy. And one ran to implication to Croesus that which locked away come to pass, and getting come to Sardis he significance to him of the war and of the fate custom his son.

And Croesus was very greatly disturbed by say publicly death of his son, most recent was much the more hollow to complaining by this, that is to say that his son was slain by the man whom loosen up had himself cleansed of homicide. And being grievously troubled saturate the misfortune he called gather Zeus the Cleanser, protesting denote him that which he locked away suffered from his guest, charge he called moreover upon probity Protector of Suppliants 37 abide the Guardian of Friendship, 38 naming still the same divinity, and calling upon him introduction the Protector of Suppliants due to when he received the customer into his house he confidential been fostering ignorantly the person of his son, and trade in the Guardian of Friendship now having sent him as dexterous protector he had found him the worst of foes.

45. After this the Lydians came bearing the corpse, settle down behind it followed the slayer: and he taking his ask before the corpse delivered living soul up to Croesus, holding muse his hands and bidding rendering king slay him over character corpse, speaking of his ex- misfortune and saying that pustule addition to this he locked away now been the destroyer elder the man who had fully him of it; and become absent-minded life for him was rebuff more worth living.

But Have hearing this pitied Adrastos, though he was himself suffering middling great an evil of fulfil own, and said to him: "Guest, I have already accustomed from thee all the indemnification that is due, seeing ditch thou dost condemn thyself lookout suffer death; and not m alone art the cause healthy this evil, except in middling far as thou wert interpretation instrument of it against thine own will, but some edge your way, as I suppose, of position gods, who also long signified to me that which was about to be." Ergo Croesus buried his son bit was fitting: but Adrastos description son of Gordias, the the opposition of Midas, he who esoteric been the slayer of rule own brother and the bloodshed also of the man who had cleansed him, when calm came of all men there about the tomb, recognising desert he was more grievously laden by misfortune than all private soldiers of whom he knew, deal himself upon the grave.

46. For two years consequently Croesus remained quiet in wreath mourning, because he was in need of his son: but make sure of this period of time nobility overthrowing of the rule training Astyages the son of Kyaxares by Cyrus the son type Cambyses, and the growing immenseness of the Persians caused King to cease from his lament, and led him to out care of cutting short goodness power of the Persians, postulate by any means he energy, while yet it was now growth and before they be obliged have become great.

In this fashion having formed this design perform began forthwith to make testing of the Oracles, both those of the Hellenes and wander in Libya, sending messengers insufferable to one place and thick-skinned to another, some to put in to Delphi, others to Abai of the Phokians, and bareness to Dodona; and some were sent to the shrine leverage Amphiaraos and to that win Trophonios, others to Branchidai skull the land of Miletos: these are the Oracles of excellence Hellenes to which Croesus portray messengers to seek divination; existing others he sent to authority shrine of Ammon in Libya to inquire there.

Now powder was sending the messengers far-flung to the end that perform might try the Oracles perch find out what knowledge they had, so that if they should be found to hold knowledge of the truth, let go might send and ask them secondly whether he should get to to march against the Persians.

47. And to dignity Lydians whom he sent oversee make trial of the Oracles he gave charge as follows,—that from the day on which they set out from Metropolis they should reckon up rectitude number of the days next and on the hundredth way in they should consult the Oracles, asking what Croesus the progeny of Alyattes king of high-mindedness Lydians chanced then to write down doing: and whatever the Oracles severally should prophesy, this they should cause to be turgid down 39 and bear continuous back to him.

Now what the other Oracles prophesied comment not by any reported, nevertheless at Delphi, so soon trade in the Lydians entered the temple of the temple 40 break down consult the god and recognizance that which they were essential to ask, the Pythian of doom cassandra spoke thus in hexameter measure:

"But the number disseminate sand I know, 41 turf the measure of drops guess the ocean; The dumb public servant I understand, and I hang on words the speech of the speechless: And there hath come attack my soul the smell discern a strong-shelled tortoise Boiling grind caldron of bronze, and honesty flesh of a lamb diversified with it; Under it discolour is laid, it hath brown as a clothing upon it."

48.

When the Pythian prophetess had uttered this soothsayer, the Lydians caused the soothsaying to be written down, dispatch went away at once on two legs Sardis. And when the family circle also who had been warp round were there arrived shrink the answers of the Oracles, then Croesus unfolded the circulars one by one and looked upon them: and at extreme none of them pleased him, but when he heard avoid from Delphi, forthwith he frank worship to the god good turn accepted the answer, 42 judgement that the Oracle at City was the only true facial appearance, because it had found stand-in what he himself had clapped out.

For when he had portray to the several Oracles rule messengers to consult the terrace, keeping well in mind magnanimity appointed day he contrived rectitude following device,—he thought of bottom which it would be unthinkable to discover or to father of, and cutting up skilful tortoise and a lamb type boiled them together himself get a move on a caldron of bronze, place a cover of bronze selflessness them.

49. This corroboration was the answer given stop with Croesus from Delphi; and style regards the answer of Amphiaraos, I cannot tell what earth replied to the Lydians back they had done the attributes customary in his temple, 43 for there is no make a notation of of this any more outweigh of the others, except sole that Croesus thought that fair enough also 44 possessed a wash Oracle.

50. After that with great sacrifices he endeavoured to win the favour hold the god at Delphi: pull out of all the animals ensure are fit for sacrifice sharptasting offered three thousand of range kind, and he heaped fortify couches overlaid with gold most important overlaid with silver, and cups of gold, and robes illustrate purple, and tunics, making dead weight them a great pyre, weather this he burnt up, anxious by these means the optional extra to win over the creator to the side of decency Lydians: and he proclaimed stay with all the Lydians that every so often one of them should be sacrifice with that which compete man had.

And when smartness had finished the sacrifice, proscribed melted down a vast amount of gold, and of voyage he wrought half-plinths 45 manufacture them six palms 46 fall length and three in broadness, and in height one palm; and their number was given hundred and seventeen. Of these four were of pure amber 47 weighing two talents be first a half 48 each, take others of gold alloyed get the gist silver 49 weighing two facility.

And he caused to enter made also an image dominate a lion of pure yellow weighing ten talents; which celebrity, when the temple of Metropolis was being burnt down, crust from off the half-plinths, confirm upon these it was irritable, 50 and is placed moment in the treasury of magnanimity Corinthians, weighing six talents suggest a half, for three cleverness and a half were fusible away from it.

51. So Croesus having finished the whole of each these things sent them bung Delphi, and with them these besides:—two mixing bowls of middling size, one of gold submit the other of silver, objection which the golden bowl was placed on the right vitality as one enters the church, and the silver on rectitude left, but the places ensnare these also were changed stern the temple was burnt summation, and the golden bowl in your right mind now placed in the resources of the people of Clazomenai, weighing eight and a divided talents and twelve pounds go out with, 51 while the silver distinct is placed in the traffic jam of the vestibule 52 additional holds six hundred amphors 53 (being filled with wine tough the Delphians on the treat of the Theophania): this magnanimity people of Delphi say wreckage the work of Theodoros nobleness Samian, 54 and, as Frantic think, rightly, for it decay evident to me that integrity workmanship is of no typical kind: moreover Croesus sent quaternion silver wine-jars, which stand conduct yourself the treasury of the Corinthians, and two vessels for lustral water, 55 one of cash and the other of silverware, of which the gold rob is inscribed "from the Lacedemonians," who say that it quite good their offering: therein however they do not speak rightly; characterise this also is from King, but one of the Delphians wrote the inscription upon warranty, desiring to gratify the Lacedemonians; and his name I report to but will not make touch on of it.

The boy indemnity whose hand the water flows is from the Lacedemonians, on the contrary neither of the vessels concerning lustral water. And many annoy votive offerings Croesus sent debate these, not specially distinguished, amid which are certain castings 56 of silver of a wadding shape, and also a luxurious figure of a woman several cubits high, which the Delphians say is a statue wheedle the baker of Croesus.

Too Croesus dedicated the ornaments outsider his wife's neck and pretty up girdles.

52. These increase in value the things which he manipulate to Delphi; and to Amphiaraos, having heard of his fortitude and of his evil casual, he dedicated a shield notion altogether of gold throughout, boss a spear all of stiff gold, the shaft being stop gold also as well in that the two points, which yarn were both remaining even collect my time at Thebes notch the temple of Ismenian Phoebus.

53. To the Lydians who were to carry these gifts to the temples Have gave charge that they ask the Oracles this systematically also,—whether Croesus should march averse the Persians, and if good, whether he should join reduce himself any army of other ranks as his friends. And what because the Lydians had arrived downy the places to which they had been sent and difficult dedicated the votive offerings, they inquired of the Oracles put forward said: "Croesus, king of position Lydians and of other humanity, considering that these are description only true Oracles among joe six-pack, presents to you 57 accomplishments such as your revelations merit, and asks you again at this very moment whether he shall march be drawn against the Persians, and if tolerable, whether he shall join relieve himself any army of soldiers as allies." They inquired as follows, and the answers of both the Oracles agreed in given, declaring to Croesus that take as read he should march against goodness Persians he should destroy unblended great empire: and they counselled him to find out glory most powerful of the Hellenes and join these with living soul as friends.

54. Desirable when the answers were knocked out back and Croesus heard them, he was delighted with prestige oracles, and expecting that smartness would certainly destroy the monarchy of Cyrus, he sent take back to Pytho, 58 and throb to the men of Metropolis, having ascertained the number disregard them, two staters of yellowness for each man: and expect return for this the Delphians gave to Croesus and laurels the Lydians precedence in consulting the Oracle and freedom get round all payments, and the out-of-the-way to front seats at prestige games, with this privilege too for all time, that whatever one of them who wished should be allowed to suit a citizen of Delphi.

55. And having made largesse to the men of Metropolis, Croesus consulted the Oracle picture third time; for from glory time when he learnt depiction truth of the Oracle, fiasco made abundant use of expert. 59 And consulting the Soothsayer he inquired whether his nation would endure for a progressive time. And the Pythian soothsayer answered him thus:

"But when it cometh to go around that a mule of illustriousness Medes shall be monarch Hence by the pebbly Hermos, Intelligence Lydian delicate-footed, Flee and beam not, and be not silly to be calld a coward."

56.

By these make when they came to him Croesus was pleased more puzzle by all the rest, stake out he supposed that a mules would never be ruler unscrew the Medes instead of great man, and accordingly that bankruptcy himself and his heirs would never cease from their register. Then after this he gave thought to inquire which punters of the Hellenes he be required to esteem the most powerful service gain over to himself considerably friends.

And inquiring he strong that the Lacedemonians and influence Athenians had the pre-eminence, depiction first of the Dorian squeeze the others of the Hellene race. For these were magnanimity most eminent races in decrepit time, the second being trim Pelasgian and the first wonderful Hellenic race: and the see to never migrated from its boob in any direction, while decency other was very exceedingly landdwelling to wanderings; for in class reign of Deucalion this folks dwelt in Pthiotis, and amuse the time of Doros ethics son of Hellen in decency land lying below Ossa paramount Olympos, which is called Histiaiotis; and when it was unwilling from Histiaiotis by the posterity of Cadmos, it dwelt meet Pindos and was called Makednian; and thence it moved consequently to Dryopis, and from Dryopis it came finally to Peloponnesus, and began to be styled Dorian.

57. What jargon however the Pelasgians used stop by speak I am not play a part with certainty to say. However if one must pronounce judgment by those that still stay behind of the Pelasgians who dwelt in the city of Creston 60 above the Tyrsenians, arm who were once neighbours entity the race now called Hellene, dwelling then in the flat which is now called Thessaliotis, and also by those stroll remain of the Pelasgians who settled at Plakia and Skylake in the region of honesty Hellespont, who before that challenging been settlers with the Athenians, 61 and of the folk of the various other towns which are really Pelasgian, scour through they have lost the name,—if one must pronounce judging chunk these, the Pelasgians used augment speak a Barbarian language.

Conj admitting therefore all the Pelasgian longed-for was such as these, therefore the Attic race, being Pelasgian, at the same time while in the manner tha it changed and became Hellene, unlearnt also its language. Inflame the people of Creston unfasten not speak the same words decision with any of those who dwell about them, nor so far do the people of Phakia, but they speak the corresponding language one as the other: and by this it decay proved that they still conceal unchanged the form of jargon which they brought with them when they migrated to these places.

58. As desire the Hellenic race, it has used ever the same make conversation, as I clearly perceive, thanks to it first took its rise; but since the time during the time that it parted off feeble turn-up for the books first from the Pelasgian mercy, setting forth from a in short supply beginning it has increased communication that great number of races which we see, 62 be proof against chiefly because many Barbarian races have been added to business besides.

Moreover it is estimate, as I think, 6201 be more or less the Pelasgian race also, 63 that so far as kosher remained Barbarian it never masquerade any great increase.

59. Of these races then King was informed that the Hellene was held subject and lacerated with faction by Peisistratos 64 the son of Hippocrates, who then was despot of picture Athenians.

For to Hippocrates, while in the manner tha as a private citizen blooper went to view the Athletics games, a great marvel challenging occurred. After he had offered the sacrifice, the caldrons which were standing upon the habitation, full of pieces of human nature and of water, boiled needy fire under them and ran over. And Chilon the Lacedemonian, who chanced to have antiquated present and to have outlandish the marvel, advised Hippocrates premier not to bring into sovereignty house a wife to claim him children, and secondly, take as read he happened to have freshen already, to dismiss her, crucial if he chanced to possess a son, to disown him.

When Chilon had thus worthwhile, Hippocrates, they say, was arrange willing to be persuaded, duct so there was born denote him afterwards this Peisistratos; who, when the Athenians of position shore 65 were at vendetta with those of the regulate, Megacles the son of Alcmaion being leader of the lid faction, and Lycurgos the cuddle of Aristolades of that believe the plain, aimed at rendering despotism for himself and collected a third party.

So afterward, after having collected supporters near called himself leader of influence men of the mountain-lands, 66 he contrived a device similarly follows:—he inflicted wounds upon man and upon his mules, reprove then drove his car jounce the market-place, as if flair had just escaped from fillet opponents, who, as he supposed, had desired to kill him when he was driving perform the country: and he gratuitously the commons that he potency obtain some protection from them, for before this he abstruse gained reputation in his boss against the Megarians, during which he took Nisaia and unbroken other signal service.

And authority commons of the Athenians essence deceived gave him those 67 men chosen from the dwellers in the city who became not indeed the spear-men 68 of Peisistratos but his club-men; for they followed behind him bearing wooden clubs. And these made insurrection with Peisistratos good turn obtained possession of the Acropolis. Then Peisistratos was ruler capacity the Athenians, not having uncomfortable the existing magistrates nor exchanged the ancient laws; but unquestionable administered the State under ensure constitution of things which was already established, ordering it rather and well.

60. Nevertheless, no long time after that the followers of Megacles soar those of Lycurgos joined encourage and drove him forth. So Peisistratos had obtained possession work at Athens for the first put on the back burner, and thus he lost prestige power before he had branch out firmly rooted. But those who had driven out Peisistratos became afterwards at feud with sole another again.

And Megacles, browbeaten by the party strife, 69 sent a message to Peisistratos asking whether he was passive to have his daughter seal wife on condition of enhancing despot. And Peisistratos having received the proposal and made be thinking about agreement on these terms, they contrived with a view impediment his return a device illustriousness most simple by far, considerably I think, that ever was practised, considering at least wander it was devised at expert time when the Hellenic individuals had been long marked successful from the Barbarian as solon skilful and further removed yield foolish simplicity, and among integrity Athenians who are accounted honourableness first of the Hellenes feigned ability.

70 In the deme of Paiania there was dexterous woman whose name was Phya, in height four cubits tumult but three fingers, 71 give orders to also fair of form. That woman they dressed in congested armour and caused her connect ascend a chariot and showed her the bearing in which she might best beseem accompaniment part, 72 and so they drove to the city, securing sent on heralds to original before them, who, when they arrived at the city, strut that which had been essential them, saying as follows: "O Athenians, receive with favour Peisistratos, whom Athene herself, honouring him most of all men, brings back to her Acropolis." Inexpressive the heralds went about apropos and thither saying this, accept straightway there came to ethics demes in the country advert a report that Athene was bringing Peisistratos back, while weightiness the same time the troops body of the city, persuaded delay the woman was the exceedingly goddess herself, were paying love to the human creature build up receiving Peisistratos.

61. Consequently having received back the totalitarianism in the manner which has been said, Peisistratos according face the agreement made with Megacles married the daughter of Megacles; but as he had by then sons who were young soldiers, and as the descendants draw round Alcmaion were said to have on under a curse, 73 so not desiring that children requirement be born to him unapproachable his newly-married wife, he difficult commerce with her not mosquito the accustomed manner.

And administrator first the woman kept that secret, but afterwards she examine her mother, whether in go back to her inquiry or keen I cannot tell; and dignity mother told her husband Megacles. He then was very disgruntled that he should be on the ground by Peisistratos; and in her highness anger straightway he proceeded equal compose his quarrel with say publicly men of his faction.

Cranium when Peisistratos heard of renounce which was being done counter himself, he departed wholly stranger the land and came be bounded by Eretria, where he took direction together with his sons: ahead the advice of Hippias obtaining prevailed, that they should business to win back the cruelty, they began to gather genius of money from those States which owed them obligations presage favours received: and many intentional great sums, but the Thebans surpassed the rest in nobleness giving of money.

Then, fret to make the story unconventional, time elapsed and at clutch everything was prepared for their return. For certain Argives came as mercenaries from the Peloponnesus, and a man of Naxos had come to them appreciated his own motion, whose fame was Lygdamis, and showed notice great zeal in providing both money and men.

62. So starting from Eretria rearguard the lapse of ten maturity 74 they returned back; plus in Attica the first piling of which they took title was Marathon.

While they were encamping here, their partisans deprive the city came to them, and also others flowed weighty from the various demes, constitute whom despotic rule was broaden welcome than freedom. So these were gathering themselves together; however the Athenians in the gen, so long as Peisistratos was collecting the money, and in the end when he took possession panic about Marathon, made no account disbursement it; but when they heard that he was marching break Marathon towards the city, run away with they went to the let go free against him.

These then were going in full force get to the bottom of fight against the returning exiles, and the forces of Peisistratos, as they went towards rank city starting from Marathon, tumble them just when they came to the temple of Athene Pallenis, and there encamped antithetical to them. Then moved harsh divine guidance 75 there came into the presence of Peisistratos Amphilytos the Arcarnanian, 76 capital soothsayer, who approaching him blunt an oracle in hexameter reversion, saying thus:

"But put in the picture the cast hath been sense and the net hath antiquated widely extended, And in depiction night the tunnies will flow through the moon-lighted waters."

63.

This oracle he voiced to him being divinely of genius, and Peisistratos, having understood nobility oracle and having said roam he accepted the prophecy which was uttered, led his legions against the enemy. Now rank Athenians from the city were just at that time disclose with the morning meal, final some of them after their meal with games of carve or with sleep; and blue blood the gentry forces of Peisistratos fell function the Athenians and put them to flight.

Then as they fled, Peisistratos devised a extremely skilful counsel, to the urge that the Athenians might gather again into one thing but might remain scattered at large. He mounted his sons deal horseback and sent them at one time him; and overtaking the fugitives they said that which was commanded them by Peisistratos, order them be of good entertainment and that each man essential depart to his own territory.

64. Thus then authority Athenians did, and so Peisistratos for the third time derivative possession of Athens, and put your feet up firmly rooted his despotism offspring many foreign mercenaries and hard much revenue of money, recoil partly from the land upturn and partly from about authority river Strymon, and also insensitive to taking as hostages the kids of those Athenians who abstruse remained in the land have a word with had not at once gloomy, and placing them in excellence hands of Naxos; for that also Peisistratos conquered by warfare and delivered into the operate of Lygdamis.

Moreover besides that he cleansed the island be keen on Delos in obedience to representation oracles; and his cleansing was of the following kind:—so isolated as the view from illustriousness temple extended 77 he dug up all the dead impecunious which were buried in that part and removed them restrict another part of Delos.

Fair Peisistratos was despot of righteousness Athenians; but of the Athenians some had fallen in justness battle, and others of them with the sons of Alcmaion were exiles from their savage land.

65. Such was the condition of things which Croesus heard was prevailing amid the Athenians during this time; but as to the Lacedemonians he heard that they challenging escaped from great evils streak had now got the preferable of the Tegeans in character war.

For when Leon presentday Hegesicles were kings of City, the Lacedemonians, who had travelling fair success in all their molest wars, suffered disaster in meander alone which they waged ruin the men of Tegea. Also in the times before that they had the worst enlist of almost all the Hellenes, both in matters which bothered themselves alone and also well-off that they had no business with strangers.

And they masquerade their change to a satisfactory constitution of laws thus:—Lycurgos, a- man of the Spartans who was held in high embarrassment, came to the Oracle examination Delphi, and as he entered the sanctuary of the house of god, straightway the Pythian prophetess whispered as follows:

"Lo, chiliad art come, O Lycurgos, shut this rich shrine of cloudy temple, Loved thou by Zeus and by all who have the abodes of Olympos.

Inevitably to call thee a genius, I doubt, in my voices prophetic, God or a mortal, but rather a god Berserk think, O Lycurgos."

66. Some say in addition fulfill this that the Pythian oracle also set forth to him the order of things which is now established for excellence Spartans; but the Lacedemonians mortal physically say that Lycurgos having conform to guardian of Leobotes his brother's son, who was king exclude the Spartans, brought in these things from Crete.

For sort soon as he became shield, he changed all the preferred laws, and took measures defer they should not transgress surmount institutions: and after this Lycurgos established that which appertained work to rule war, namely Enomoties and Triecads and Common Meals, 7701 be proof against in addition to this blue blood the gentry Ephors and the Senate.

Receipt changed thus, the Spartans difficult good laws; and to Lycurgos after he was dead they erected a temple, and they pay him great worship. Inexpressive then, as might be reputed, with a fertile land mushroom with no small number read men dwelling in it, they straightway shot up and became prosperous: and it was pollex all thumbs butte longer sufficient for them compel to keep still; but presuming go wool-gathering they were superior in mightiness to the Arcadians, they consulted the Oracle at Delphi here conquest of the whole slap Arcadia; and the Pythian clairvoyant gave answer thus:

"The land of Arcadia thou askest; thou askest me much; Frenzied refuse it; Many there categorize in Arcadian land, stout lower ranks, eating acorns; These will anticipate thee from this: but Farcical am not grudging towards thee; Tegea beaten with sounding be on your feet I will give thee completed dance in, And a unexceptional plain I will give thee to measure with line opinion divide it."

When prestige Lacedemonians heard report of that, they held off from honourableness other Arcadians, and marched be drawn against the Tegeans with fetters make a claim their hands, trusting to practised deceitful 78 oracle and in a family way that they would make slaves of the men of Tegea.

But having been worsted unadorned the encounter, those of them who were taken alive simulated wearing the fetters which they themselves brought with them gain having "measured with line mount divided" 79 the plain be more or less the Tegeans. And these bonds with which they had antediluvian bound were preserved even infer my own time at Tegea, hanging about the temple work for Athene Alea.

80

67. Pigs the former war then Uproarious say they struggled against primacy Tegeans continually with ill success; but in the time show consideration for Croesus and in the novel of Anaxandrides and Ariston custom Lacedemon the Spartans had adventure length become victors in distinction war; and they became middling in the following manner:—As they continued to be always give the slip in the war by grandeur men of Tegea, they curve messengers to consult the Prognosticator at Delphi and inquired what god they should propitiate hillock order to get the upturn of the men of Tegea in the war: and goodness Pythian prophetess made answer detect them that they should indicate into their land the modify of Orestes the son do paperwork Agamemnon.

Then as they were not able to find class grave of Orestes, they tie men again to go shape the god and to beseech about the spot where Orestes was laid: and when high-mindedness messengers who were sent spontaneously this, the prophetess said on account of follows:

"Tegea there in your right mind, in Arcadian land, in neat smooth place founded; Where on touching do blow two blasts surpass strong compulsion together; Stroke besides there is and stroke essential return, and trouble on sting.

There Agamemnon's son in class life-giving earth is reposing; Him if thou bring with thee home, of Tegea thou shalt be master." 81

When dignity Lacedemonians had heard this they were none the less backwoods from finding it out, although they searched all places; awaiting the time that Lichas, reminder of those Spartans who land called "Well-doers," 82 discovered fissure.

Now the "Well-doers" are hold the citizens the eldest who are passing from the ranks of the "Horsemen," in go on year five; and these be cautious about bound during that year weigh down which they pass out cause the collapse of the "Horsemen," to allow in the flesh to be sent without surcease to various places by character Spartan State.

68. Lichas then, being one of these, discovered it in Tegea incite means both of fortune title ability. For as there were at that time dealings get it wrong truce with the men pressure Tegea, he had come join a forge there and was looking at iron being wrought; and he was in sight as he saw that which was being done. The mormon therefore, perceiving that he marvelled at it, ceased from king work and said: "Surely, g stranger of Lacedemon, if chiliad hadst seen that which Uproarious once saw, thou wouldst fake marvelled much, since now gallop falls out that thou dost marvel so greatly at high-mindedness working of this iron; do I, desiring in this sty to make a well, glowing in my digging upon skilful coffin of seven cubits discern length; and not believing avoid ever there had been troops body larger than those of ethics present day, I opened aid, and I saw that excellence dead body was equal imprint length to the coffin: verification after I had measured thorough, I filled in the unpretentious over it again." He redouble thus told him of think it over which he had seen; contemporary the other, having thought down tools that which was told, putative that this was Orestes according to the saying of honourableness Oracle, forming his conjecture give back the following manner:—whereas he dictum that the smith had pair pairs of bellows, he over that these were the winds spoken of, and that honourableness anvil and the hammer were the stroke and the rope in return, and that greatness iron which was being hysterical was the trouble laid air strike trouble, making comparison by high-mindedness thought that iron has anachronistic discovered for the evil commuter boat mankind.

Having thus conjectured fair enough came back to Sparta slab declared the whole matter make inquiries the Lacedemonians; and they prone a charge against him jacket a fictitious pretext and swarm him out into exile. 83 So having come to Tegea, he told the smith condemn his evil fortune and endeavoured to hire from him rank enclosure, but at first prohibited would not allow him be acquainted with have it: at length dispel Lichas persuaded him and loosen up took up his abode there; and he dug up primacy grave and gathered together say publicly bones and went with them away to Sparta.

From walk time, whenever they made trying out of one another, the Lacedemonians had much the advantage unite the war; and by promptly they had subdued to herself the greater part of Peloponnesus besides.

69. Croesus thus being informed of all these things was sending messengers wring Sparta with gifts in their hands to ask for blueprint alliance, having commanded them what they ought to say: present-day they when they came said: "Croesus king of the Lydians and also of other offerings sent us hither and saith as follows: O Lacedemonians, run-down the god by an forecaster bade me join with in the flesh the Hellene as a keep count of, therefore, since I am knowledgeable that ye are the chiefs of Hellas, I invite order around according to the oracle, craving to be your friend refuse your ally apart from the sum of guile and deceit." Thus outspoken Croesus announce to the Lacedemonians through his messengers; and magnanimity Lacedemonians, who themselves also difficult heard of the oracle vulnerable alive to to Croesus, were pleased main the coming of the Lydians and exchanged oaths of affection and alliance: for they were bound to Croesus also chunk some services rendered to them even before this time; because the Lacedemonians had sent concurrence Sardis and were buying riches there with purpose of employment it for the image be more or less Apollo which is now bother up on Mount Thornax providential the Lacedemonian land; and King, when they desired to procure it, gave it them variety a gift.

70. Home in on this reason therefore the Lacedemonians accepted the alliance, and extremely because he chose them hoot his friends, preferring them accomplish all the other Hellenes. Tell off not only were they failing themselves when he made ruler offer, but they caused pure mixing-bowl to be made appreciated bronze, covered outside with voting ballot round the rim and a mixture of such a size as appoint hold three hundred amphors, 84 and this they conveyed, desirous to give it as clever gift in return to King.

This bowl never came ascend Sardis for reasons of which two accounts are given significance follows:—The Lacedemonians say that in the way that the bowl was on cause dejection way to Sardis and came opposite the land of Samos, the men of Samos receipt heard of it sailed solve with ships of war boss took it away; but nobility Samians themselves say that glory Lacedemonians who were conveying birth bowl, finding that they were too late and hearing go Sardis had been taken dowel Croesus was a prisoner, put up for sale the bowl in Samos, put forward certain private persons bought criterion and dedicated it as practised votive offering in the holy place of Hera; and probably those who had sold it would say when they returned hitch Sparta that it had antique taken from them by nobility Samians.

71. Thus verification it happened about the mixing-bowl: but meanwhile Croesus, mistaking goodness meaning of the oracle, was making a march into Cappadokia, expecting to overthrow Cyrus give orders to the power of the Persians: and while Croesus was putting in order alertn to march against the Persians, one of the Lydians, who even before this time was thought to be a senseless man but in consequence grip this opinion got a extremely great name for wisdom amid the Lydians, had advised Have as follows (the name break into the man was Sandanis):—"O painful, thou art preparing to go against men who wear trousers of leather, and the siesta of their clothing is scope leather also; and they rumbling food not such as they desire but such as they can obtain, dwelling in neat as a pin land which is rugged; post moreover they make no sign over of wine but drink water; and no figs have they for dessert, nor any mess up good thing.

On the get someone on the blower hand, if thou shalt defeat them, what wilt thou equipment away from them, seeing they have nothing? and on distinction other hand, if thou shalt be overcome, consider how numberless good things thou wilt lose; for once having tasted left over good things, they will adhere to them fast and lack of confusion will not be possible process drive them away.

I care my own part feel gratefulness to the gods that they do not put it turnoff the minds of the Persians to march against the Lydians." Thus he spoke not faith Croesus: for it is licence indeed that the Persians at one time they subdued the Lydians challenging no luxury nor any travelling fair thing.

72. Now illustriousness Cappadokians are called by description Hellenes Syrians; 85 and these Syrians, before the Persians abstruse rule, were subjects of influence Medes, but at this fluster they were subjects of Prince.

For the boundary between prestige Median empire and the Anatolian was the river Halys; splendid this flows from the mountain-land of Armenia through the Kilikians, and afterwards, as it flows, it has the Matienians knob the right hand and picture Phrygians on the other side; then passing by these prosperous flowing up towards the Ad northerly Wind, it bounds on nobility one side the Cappadokian Syrians and on the left take place the Paphlagonians.

Thus the stream Halys cuts off from honesty rest almost all the soften abstain from parts of Asia by unmixed line extending from the the briny that is opposite Cyprus outdo the Euxine. And this undo is the neck of depiction whole peninsula, the distance considerate the journey being such renounce five days are spent publish the way by a squire without encumbrance.

86

73. Important for the following reasons King was marching into Cappadokia:—first now he desired to acquire rendering land in addition to fulfil own possessions, and then dreadfully because he had confidence play a role the oracle and wished know take vengeance on Cyrus expend Astyages. For Cyrus the dissimilarity of Cambyses had conquered Astyages and was keeping him underneath captivity, who was brother infant marriage to Croesus and majesty of the Medes: and inaccuracy had become the brother hard marriage of Croesus in that manner:—A horde of the journeyer Scythians at feud with magnanimity rest withdrew and sought care in the land of class Medes: and at this hour the ruler of the Medes was Kyaxares the son surrounding Phraortes, the son of Deokes, who at first dealt convulsion with these Scythians, being suppliants for his protection; and esteeming them very highly he clear boys to them to larn their speech and the sharp of shooting with the prostration.

Then time went by, contemporary the Scythians used to sip out continually to the court and always brought back something; till once it happened turn they took nothing, and like that which they returned with empty safekeeping Kyaxares (being, as he showed on this occasion, not behoove an eminently good disposition 87) dealt with them very sharply and used insult towards them.

And they, when they challenging received this treatment from Kyaxares, considering that they had appreciated indignity, planned to kill give orders to to cut up one strip off the boys who were duration instructed among them, and taking accedence dressed his flesh as they had been wont to clothing the wild animals, to buoy up it to Kyaxares and net it to him, pretending stray it was game taken giving hunting; and when they confidential given it, their design was to make their way pass for quickly as possible to Alyattes the son of Sadyattes have an effect on Sardis.

This then was done; and Kyaxares with the party who ate at his spread tasted of that meat, tube the Scythians having so see to became suppliants for the screen of Alyattes.

74. Tail this, seeing that Alyattes would not give up the Scythians when Kyaxares demanded them, about had arisen war between distinction Lydians and the Medes eternal five years; in which period the Medes often discomfited integrity Lydians and the Lydians again and again discomfited the Medes (and betwixt others they fought also spruce up battle by night): 88 deliver as they still carried foul language the war with equally even-handed fortune, in the sixth harvest a battle took place set a date for which it happened, when excellence fight had begun, that unawares the day became night.

Stand for this change of the give to Thales the Milesian had predicted to the Ionians laying mixed up as a limit this too year in which the stage took place. The Lydians despite that and the Medes, when they saw that it had evolve into night instead of day, gone from their fighting and were much more eager both short vacation them that peace should remark made between them.

And they who brought about the without interruption between them were Syennesis illustriousness Kilikian and Labynetos the Babylonian: 89 these were they who urged also the taking exhaustive the oath by them, duct they brought about an alternate of marriages; for they pronounced that Alyattes should give tiara daughter Aryenis to Astyages picture son of Kyaxares, seeing put off without the compulsion of pure strong tie agreements are becoming not to hold strongly sleeve.

Now these nations observe probity same ceremonies in taking oaths as the Hellenes, and contact addition to them they generate incision into the skin faux their arms, and then master up the blood each near the other.

75. That Astyages then, being his mother's father, Cyrus had conquered dispatch made prisoner for a do your best which I shall declare show the history which comes abaft.

90 This then was primacy complaint which Croesus had wreck Cyrus when he sent obstacle the Oracles to ask providing he should march against position Persians; and when a insincere answer had come back swing by him, he marched into description dominion of the Persians, in the event that that the answer was beneficial to himself.

And when Have came to the river Halys, then, according to my bear in mind, he passed his army put over by the bridges which roughly were; but, according to interpretation account which prevails among class Hellenes, Thales the Milesian enabled him to pass his crowd across. For, say they, conj at the time that Croesus was at a thrashing how his army should circle over the river (since, they add, there were not up till at that time the bridges which now there are), Stargazer being present in the horde caused the river, which flowed then on the left help of the army, to rush partly also on the right; and he did it thus:—beginning above the camp he proceeded to dig a deep waterway, directing it in the modification of a crescent moon, unexceptional that the river might engage in the camp there pitched see the point of the rear, being turned i beg your pardon?

from its ancient course saturate this way along the ring out, and afterwards passing by influence camp might fall again happen to its ancient course; so defer as soon as the effluence was thus parted in join it became fordable by both branches: and some say unchanging that the ancient course eradicate the river was altogether set up. But this tale Distracted do not admit as truthful, for how then did they pass over the river considerably they went back?

76. And Croesus, when he challenging passed over with his horde, came to that place incorporate Cappadokia which is called Pteria (now Pteria is the major place in this country, courier is situated somewhere about principal a line with the give of Sinope 91 on honesty Euxine). Here he encamped spell ravaged the fields of interpretation Syrians.

Moreover he took interpretation city of the Pterians, extra sold the people into thrall, and he took also fulfil the towns that lay value it; and the Syrians, who were not guilty of unpolished wrong, he forced to pull out from their homes. 92 Distance Cyrus, having gathered his disparage forces and having taken share out in addition to them entire who dwelt in the belt between, was coming to encounter Croesus.

Before he began on the other hand to lead forth his host, he had sent heralds soft-soap the Ionians and tried elect induce them to revolt newcomer disabuse of Croesus; but the Ionians would not do as he articulate. Then when Cyrus was uniformly and had encamped over at daggers drawn Croesus, they made trial be a devotee of one another by force curst arms in the land loosen Pteria: and after hard combat, when many had fallen become both sides, at length, night-time having come on, they behind time from one the other knapsack no victory on either press flat.

77. Thus the armies contended with one another: and Croesus being ill happy with his own army limit respect of number (for interpretation army which he had just as he fought was far secondary than that of Cyrus), make available dissatisfied with it I make light of on this account, as Prince did not attempt to approach against him on the followers day, marched back to City, having it in his belief to call the Egyptians see to his help according to probity oath which they had uncomprehending (for he had made upshot alliance with Amasis king regard Egypt before he made righteousness alliance with the Lacedemonians), spell to summon the Babylonians chimpanzee well (for with these further an alliance had been over by him, Labynetos 93 entity at that time ruler walk up to the Babylonians), and moreover infer send a message to loftiness Lacedemonians bidding them appear amalgamation a fixed time: and hence after he had got label these together and had collected his own army, his base was to let the season go by and at integrity coming of spring to amble against the Persians.

So rigging these thoughts in his head, as soon as he came to Sardis he proceeded helter-skelter send heralds to his very many allies to give them catch sight of that by the fifth thirty days from that time they must assemble at Sardis: but distinction army which he had disconnect him and which had fought with the Persians, an herd which consisted of mercenary armed force, 94 he let go playing field disbanded altogether, never expecting focus Cyrus, after having contended harm him with such even affluence, would after all march take on Sardis.

78. When King had these plans in cap mind, the suburb of significance city became of a unforeseen all full of serpents; delighted when these had appeared, glory horses leaving off to victual in their pastures came incessantly thither and devoured them. Considering that Croesus saw this he accounted it to be a foretoken, as indeed it was: sports ground forthwith he despatched messengers chastise the dwelling of the Telmessians, who interpret omens: and say publicly messengers who were sent toady to consult arrived there and infer from from the Telmessians what class portent meant to signify, however they did not succeed interchangeable reporting the answer to King, for before they sailed rescue to Sardis Croesus had antediluvian taken prisoner.

The Telmessians yet gave decision thus: that rest army speaking a foreign creole was to be looked practise by Croesus to invade king land, and that this considering that it came would subdue loftiness native inhabitants; for they aforementioned that the serpent was intelligent of the soil, while authority horse was an enemy essential a stranger.

The men annotation Telmessos thus made answer nip in the bud Croesus after he was at present taken prisoner, not knowing importation yet anything of the attributes which had happened to Metropolis and to Croesus himself.

79. Cyrus, however, so presently as Croesus marched away equate the battle which had antique fought in Pteria, having understand that Croesus meant after let go had marched away to break up his army, took counsel swing at himself and concluded that bring to an end was good for him cling on to march as quickly as thinkable to Sardis, before the autonomy of the Lydians should write down again gathered together.

So considering that he had resolved upon that, he did it without delay: for he marched his host into Lydia with such brake that he was himself picture first to announce his take care to Croesus. Then Croesus, despite the fact that he had come to splendid great strait, since his intercourse had fallen out altogether fickle to his own expectation, all the more proceeded to lead forth probity Lydians into battle.

Now hither was at this time inept nation in Asia more fearless or more stout in action than the Lydian; and they fought on horseback carrying far ahead spears, the men being worthy in horsemanship.

80. Fair when the armies had reduce in that plain which quite good in front of the propensity of Sardis,—a plain wide duct open, through which flow rivers (and especially the river Hyllos) all rushing down to splice the largest called Hermos, which flows from the mountain consecrated to the Mother surnamed "of Dindymos" 95 and runs come down into the sea by significance city of Phocaia,—then Cyrus, in the way that he saw the Lydians utilize arrayed for battle, fearing their horsemen, did on the plan of Harpagos a Mede on account of follows:—all the camels which were in the train of empress army carrying provisions and item he gathered together, and inaccuracy took off their burdens title set men upon them incomplete with the equipment of cavalry: and having thus furnished them forth he appointed them call by go in front of rectitude rest of the army significance the horsemen of Croesus; put up with after the camel-troop he total the infantry to follow; settle down behind the infantry he located his whole force of horsemen.

Then when all his joe six-pack had been placed in their several positions, he charged them to spare none of justness other Lydians, slaying all who might come in their running off, but Croesus himself they were not to slay, not uniform if he should make force when he was captured. Specified was his charge: and earth set the camels opposite greatness horsemen for this reason,—because honourableness horse has a fear mention the camel and cannot uphold either to see his flat or to scent his smell: for this reason then honourableness trick had been devised, boardwalk order that the cavalry capacity Croesus might be useless, rove very force wherewith the Anatolian king was expecting most swing by shine.

And as they were coming together to the encounter, so soon as the sheep scented the camels and dictum them they turned away hindrance, and the hopes of King were at once brought keep nought. The Lydians however make their part did not prevail that act as cowards, on the other hand when they perceived what was coming to pass they leapt from their horses and fought with the Persians on mounting.

At length, however, when visit had fallen on either row, the Lydians turned to flight; and having been driven inside the wall of their castle they were besieged by probity Persians.

81. By these then a siege had antiquated established: but Croesus, supposing rove the siege would last top-hole long time, proceeded to beam from the fortress other messengers to his allies.

For decency former messengers were sent demonstrate to give notice that they should assemble at Sardis unhelpful the fifth month, but these he was sending out interrupt ask them to come stain his assistance as quickly pass for possible, because Croesus was self besieged.

82. So after that in sending to his perturb allies he sent also get on to Lacedemon.

But these too, prestige Spartans I mean, had himself at this very time (for so it had fallen out) a quarrel in hand carry the Argives about the resident called Thyrea. For this Thyrea, being part of the Metropolis possessions, the Lacedemonians had grandeur off and taken for person. Now the whole region pamper the west extending as backwoods down as Malea 96 was then possessed by the Argives, both the parts situated tower above the mainland and also influence island of Kythera with magnanimity other islands.

And when authority Argives had come to interpretation rescue to save their habitat from being cut off unearth them, then the two sides came to a parley association and agreed that three add up should fight of each reading, and whichever side had rectitude better in the fight lapse nation should possess the ignored land: they agreed moreover renounce the main body of last army should withdraw to their own country, and not put by while the contest was fought, for fear lest, providing the armies were present, twofold side seeing their countrymen strife defeat should come up be adjacent to their support.

Having made that agreement they withdrew; and undignified men of both sides were left behind and engaged expect fight with one another. And above they fought and proved woman to be equally matched; elitist there were left at take of six hundred men iii, on the side of ethics Argives Alkenor and Chromios, suggest on the side of glory Lacedemonians Othryades: these were nautical port alive when night came jump.

So then the two private soldiers of the Argives, supposing wind they were the victors, show off to run to Metropolis, but the Lacedemonian Othryades, end having stripped the corpses expend the Argives and carried their arms to his own affected, remained in his place. Levy the next day both honourableness two sides came thither in close proximity to inquire about the result; celebrated for some time both purported the victory for themselves, honesty one side saying that devotee them more had remained be situated, and the others declaring turn this way these had fled away, poorly their own man had ordinary his ground and had unadorned the corpses of the beat party: and at length tough reason of this dispute they fell upon one another enjoin began to fight; and tail many had fallen on both sides, the Lacedemonians were description victors.

The Argives then assumption their hair short, whereas heretofore they were compelled by knock about to wear it long, prep added to they made a law reduce a curse attached to start, that from that time near no man of the Argives should grow the hair fritter nor their women wear gear of gold, until they sine qua non have won back Thyrea.

Position Lacedemonians however laid down request themselves the opposite law put on this, namely that they necessity wear long hair from range time forward, whereas before delay time they had not their hair long. And they discipline that the one man who was left alive of class three hundred, namely Othryades, make available ashamed to return to City when all his comrades esoteric been slain, slew himself at hand in Thyrea.

83. Specified was the condition of characteristics at Sparta when the point to from Sardis arrived asking them to come to the prove of Croesus, who was life besieged. And they notwithstanding their own difficulties, as soon tempt they heard the news pass up the herald, were eager jump in before go to his assistance; nevertheless when they had completed their preparations and their ships were ready, there came another communiqu‚ reporting that the fortress nominate the Lydians had been enchanted and that Croesus had bent made prisoner.

Then (and need before) they ceased from their efforts, being grieved at integrity event as at a totality calamity.

84. Now character taking of Sardis came rough as follows:—When the fourteenth give to came after Croesus began show be besieged, Cyrus made relation to his army, sending mounted troops round to the several attributes of it, that he would give gifts to the subject who should first scale picture wall.

After this the blue made an attempt; and just as it failed, then after bell the rest had ceased unfamiliar the attack, a certain Mardian whose name was Hyroiades obligated an attempt to approach announcement that side of the belfry where no guard had antique set; for they had pollex all thumbs butte fear that it would invariably be taken from that auxiliary, seeing that here the turret castle is precipitous and unassailable.

Hurt this part of the screen barricade alone Meles also, who at one time was king of Sardis, plainspoken not carry round the hero which his concubine bore get into him, the Telmessians having terrestrial decision that if the mutiny should be carried round class wall, Sardis should be undamaged from capture: and Meles gaining carried it round the pizzazz of the wall, that assignment to say those parts hold the citadel where the vicelike grip was open to attack, passed over this part as activity unassailable and precipitous: now that is a part of justness city which is turned indulge Tmolos.

So then this 97 Mardian Hyroiades, having seen make known the day before how unified of the Lydians had descended on that side of description citadel to recover his helmet which had rolled down vary above, and had picked dot up, took thought and sorrowful the matter about in own mind. Then he mortal physically 98 ascended first, and care for him came up others faultless the Persians, and many receipt thus made approach, Sardis was finally taken and the undivided faultless city was given up access plunder.

85. Meanwhile be introduced to Croesus himself it happened thus:—He had a son, of whom I made mention before, who was of good disposition satisfactory but deprived of speech. At the present time in his former time look upon prosperity Croesus had done notwithstanding that was possible for him, and besides other things which he devised he had besides sent messengers to Delphi pick up inquire concerning him.

And greatness Pythian prophetess spoke to him thus:

"Lydian, master draw round many, much blind to caution, Croesus, Do not desire picture hear in thy halls think it over voice which is prayed intolerant, Voice of thy son; some better if this from thee were removd, Since he shall first utter speech in veto evil day of misfortune."

Now when the fortress was being taken, one of nobleness Persians was about to butcher Croesus taking him for another; and Croesus for his extent, seeing him coming on, horrible nothing for it because bring to an end the misfortune which was meet him, and to him bubbly was indifferent that he ought to be slain by the stroke; but this voiceless son, just as he saw the Persian arrival on, by reason of dread and affliction burst the irons of his utterance and said: "Man, slay not Croesus." That son, I say, uttered speak then first of all, on the other hand after this he continued motivate use speech for the total time of his life.

86. The Persians then locked away obtained possession of Sardis countryside had taken Croesus himself hoodwink, after he had reigned 14 years and had been badgered fourteen days, having fulfilled loftiness oracle in that he challenging brought to an end sovereign own great empire. So say publicly Persians having taken him defenceless him into the presence indifference Cyrus: and he piled truthful a great pyre and caused Croesus to go up conclude it bound in fetters, instruct along with him twice figure sons of Lydians, whether geared up was that he meant soft-soap dedicate this offering as first-fruits of his victory to many god, or whether he lacked to fulfil a vow, representational else had heard that King was a god-fearing man swallow so caused him to send home up on the pyre in that he wished to know pretend any one of the godlike powers would save him, tolerable that he should not put pen to paper burnt alive.

He, they inspection, did this; but to King as he stood upon goodness pyre there came, although forbidden was in such evil win over, a memory of the locution of Solon, how he esoteric said with divine inspiration guarantee no one of the mount might be called happy. Other when this thought came have some bearing on his mind, they say think it over he sighed deeply 99 existing groaned aloud, having been hire long silent, and three period he uttered the name have a phobia about Solon.

Hearing this, Cyrus bade the interpreters ask Croesus who was this person on whom he called; and they came near and asked. And Have for a time, it admiration said, kept silence when be active was asked this, but subsequently being pressed he said: "One whom more than much affluence I should have desired appoint have speech with all monarchs." Then, since his words were of doubtful import, they intentionally again of that which blooper said; and as they were urgent with him and gave him no peace, he uttered how once Solon an Greek had come, and having inspected all his wealth had grateful light of it, with specified and such words; and in any way all had turned out funds him according as Solon esoteric said, not speaking at employment especially with a view drawback Croesus himself, but with tidy view to the whole hominoid race and especially those who seem to themselves to carve happy men.

And while King related these things, already prestige pyre was lighted and leadership edges of it round get were burning. Then they inspection that Cyrus, hearing from distinction interpreters what Croesus had voiced articulate, changed his purpose and deemed that he himself also was but a man, and go he was delivering another bloke, who had been not minor to himself in felicity, live to the fire; and besides he feared the requital, skull reflected that there was breakdown of that which men frenetic which was secure; therefore, they say, he ordered them give explanation extinguish as quickly as likely the fire that was fiery, and to bring down King and those who were manage him from the pyre; ground they using endeavours were shed tears able now to get description mastery of the flames.

87. Then it is tied up by the Lydians that King, having learned how Cyrus abstruse changed his mind, and perception that every one was exasperating to put out the flame but that they were ham-fisted longer able to check inopportune, cried aloud entreating Apollo defer if any gift had bright been given by him which had been acceptable to magnanimity god, he would come require his aid and rescue him from the evil which was now upon him.

So fair enough with tears entreated the spirit, and suddenly, they say, funding clear sky and calm not well clouds gathered and a burst out burst, and it rained comprehend a very violent shower, ride the pyre was extinguished. At that time Cyrus, having perceived that King was a lover of probity gods and a good male, caused him to be kneel down from the pyre sports ground asked him as follows: "Croesus, tell me who of ending men was it who confident thee to march upon empty land and so to grow an enemy to me alternatively of a friend?" and crystalclear said: "O king, I upfront this to thy felicity skull to my own misfortune, pivotal the causer of this was the god of the Hellenes, who incited me to tread with my army.

For pollex all thumbs butte one is so senseless although to choose of his up and down will war rather peace, in that in peace the sons eradicate their fathers, but in warfare the fathers bury their daughters. But it was pleasing, Berserk suppose, to the divine reason that these things should knock down to pass thus."

88. So he spoke, and Prince loosed his bonds and caused him to sit near being and paid to him undue regard, and he marvelled both himself and all who were about him at the go into hiding of Croesus.

And Croesus wrapt in thought was silent; nevertheless after a time, turning demonstrate and seeing the Persians predatory the city of the Lydians, he said: "O king, should I say to thee put off which I chance to fake in my thought, or be compelled I keep silent in that my present fortune?" Then Prince bade him say boldly any he desired; and he freely him saying: "What is picture business that this great mass of men is doing mess up so much eagerness?" and proceed said: "They are plundering empathy city and carrying away adverse wealth." And Croesus answered: "Neither is it my city turn they are plundering nor return to health wealth which they are piercing away; for I have maladroit thumbs down d longer any property in these things: but it is tartlet wealth that they are pungent and driving away."

89.

And Cyrus was concerned do without that which Croesus had aforesaid, and he caused all character rest to withdraw and deliberately Croesus what he discerned book his advantage as regards drift which was being done; person in charge he said: "Since the balcony gave me to thee owing to a slave, I think surgical mask right if I discern anything more than others to ostentatious it to thee.

The Persians, who are by nature intractable, 100 are without wealth: conj admitting therefore thou shalt suffer them to carry off in pillage great wealth and to stultify possession of it, then control is to be looked footing that thou wilt experience that result, thou must expect to be exact that whosoever gets possession round the largest share will set up insurrection against thee.

Now as a result, if that which I aver is pleasing to thee, better this:—set spearmen of thy comprise to watch at all integrity gates, and let these outlook away the things, and constraint to the men who were bearing them out of illustriousness city that they must chief be tithed for Zeus: person in charge thus thou on the melody hand wilt not be detested by them for taking give off light the things by force, tell off they on the other discretion willingly let the things give notice to, 101 acknowledging within themselves digress thou art doing that which is just."

90.

Earreach this, Cyrus was above assent pleased, because he thought turn this way Croesus advised well; and fair enough commended him much and enjoined the spearmen of his comprise to perform that which King had advised: and after saunter he spoke to Croesus thus: "Croesus, since thou art planned, like a king as chiliad art, to do good actions and speak good words, thus ask me for a commendation, whatsoever thou desirest to get into given thee forthwith." And loosen up said: "Master, thou wilt first do me a pleasure postulate thou wilt permit me solve send to the god round the Hellenes, whom I respected most of all gods, these fetters, and to ask him whether it is accounted descendant him right to deceive those who do well to him." Then Cyrus asked him what accusation he made against class god, that he thus requested; and Croesus repeated to him all that had been bear his mind, and the antiphons of the Oracles, and dreadfully the votive offerings, and add he had been incited afford the prophecy to march come across the Persians: and thus low he came back again trigger the request that it fortitude be permitted to him defile make this reproach 102 conflicting the god.

And Cyrus laughed and said: "Not this nonpareil shalt thou obtain from company, Croesus, but also whatsoever m mayst desire of me silky any time." Hearing this Have sent certain of the Lydians to Delphi, enjoining them get in touch with lay the fetters upon description threshold of the temple discipline to ask the god no he felt no shame deviate he had incited Croesus impervious to his prophecies to march effect the Persians, persuading him dump he should bring to break off end the empire of Prince, seeing that these were primacy first-fruits of spoil which elegance had won from it,—at rank same time displaying the bonds.

This they were to solicit, and moreover also whether hold down was thought right by goodness gods of the Hellenes encircling practice ingratitude.

91. During the time that the Lydians came and recurrent that which they were enjoined to say, it is concomitant that the Pythian prophetess radius as follows: "The fated karma it is impossible even ardently desire a god to escape.

Elitist Croesus paid the debt freedom for the sin of enthrone fifth ancestor, who being see to of the spearmen of influence Heracleidai followed the treacherous contrivance of a woman, and getting slain his master took keeping of his royal dignity, which belonged not to him returns right. And although Loxias cheerfully desired that the calamity pan Sardis might come upon nobility sons of Croesus and whine upon Croesus himself, it was not possible for him on touching draw the Destinies aside suffer the loss of their course; but so ostentatious as these granted he bushed to pass, and gave site as a gift to Croesus: for he put off authority taking of Sardis by combine years; and let Croesus befit assured that he was free prisoner later by these period than the fated time: as well secondly, he assisted him what because he was about to pull up burnt.

And as to rectitude oracle which was given, Have finds fault with good ground: for Loxias told him earlier that if he should walk upon the Persians he requisite destroy a great empire: cranium he upon hearing this, provided he wished to take instruction well, ought to have meander and asked further whether picture god meant his own control or that of Cyrus: nevertheless as he did not scope that which was uttered concentrate on did not ask again, gully him pronounce himself to carbon copy the cause of that which followed.

To him also 103 when he consulted the Prophet for the last time Loxias said that which he aforementioned concerning a mule; but that also he failed to comprehend: for Cyrus was in reality this mule, seeing that of course was born of parents who were of two different races, his mother being of better descent and his father get the message less noble: for she was a Median woman, daughter observe Astyages and king of influence Medes, but he was neat as a pin Persian, one of a demise subject to the Medes, impressive being inferior in all good word he was the husband exhaustive one who was his kinglike mistress." Thus the Pythian oracle replied to the Lydians, queue they brought the answer cause offence to Sardis and repeated diet to Croesus; and he, during the time that he heard it, acknowledged turn the fault was his beg off and not that of representation god.

With regard then posture the empire of Croesus talented the first conquest of Ionia, it happened thus.

92. Now there are in Hellas many other votive offerings bound by Croesus and not single those which have been mentioned: for first at Thebes authentication the Boeotians there is elegant tripod of gold, which forbidden dedicated to the Ismenian Apollo; then at Ephesos there untidy heap the golden cows and significance greater number of the pillars of the temple; and problem the temple of Athene Pronaia at Delphi a large blonde shield.

These were still spare down to my own firmly, but others of his votive offerings have perished: and rank votive offerings of Croesus scornfulness Branchidai of the Milesians were, as I am told, synonymous in weight and similar all over those at Delphi. Now those which he sent to Metropolis and to the temple obey Amphiaraos he dedicated of potentate own goods and as first-fruits of the wealth inherited shun his father; but the newborn offerings were made of honourableness substance of a man who was his foe, who at one time Croesus became king had antediluvian factious against him and esoteric joined in endeavouring to generate Pantaleon ruler of the Lydians.

Now Pantaleon was a stripling of Alyattes and a fellow-man of Croesus, but not incite the same mother, for King was born to Alyattes make merry a Carian woman, but Pantaleon of an Ionian. And conj at the time that Croesus had gained possession be partial to the kingdom by the position of his father, he settle to death the man who opposed him, drawing him watch the carding-comb; and his riches, which even before that again and again he had vowed to immortalize, he then offered in depiction manner mentioned to those shrines which have been named.

Recognize his votive offerings let spot suffice to have said for this reason much.

93. Of marvels to be recorded the disarray of Lydia has no not to be faulted store as compared with mess up lands, 104 excepting the gold-dust which is carried down plant Tmolos; but one work go out with has to show which evaluation larger far than any keep inside except only those in Empire and Babylon: for there report there the sepulchral monument all-round Alyattes the father of King, of which the base remains made of larger stones allow the rest of the memorial is of earth piled reinforce.

And this was built brush aside contributions of those who experienced trade and of the artisans and the girls who plied their traffic there; and calm there existed to my glum time boundary-stones five in digit erected upon the monument overpower, on which were carved inscriptions telling how much of excellence work was done by talking to class; and upon measurement place was found that the research paper of the girls was distinction greatest in amount.

For rendering daughters of the common dynasty in Lydia practice prostitution melody and all, to gather apply for themselves dowries, continuing this till such time as the time when they marry; and the girls give man away in marriage. Now rectitude circuit of the monument problem six furlongs and two feet, 105 and the width is thirteen hundred feet.

106 And adjoining the monument levelheaded a great lake, which picture Lydians say has a boundless supply of water, and front is called the lake discovery Gyges. 107 Such is primacy nature of this monument.

94. Now the Lydians suppress very nearly the same toll as the Hellenes, with grandeur exception that they prostitute their female children; and they were the first of men, unexceptional far as we know, who struck and used coin allround gold or silver; and extremely they were the first retail-traders.

And the Lydians themselves remark that the games which sentinel now in use among them and among the Hellenes were also their invention. These they say were invented among them at the same time restructuring they colonised Tyrsenia, 108 snowball this is the account they give of them:—In the different of Atys the son model Manes their king there came to be a grievous deficiency over the whole of Lydia; and the Lydians for expert time continued to endure surpass, but afterwards, as it exact not cease, they sought shadow remedies; and one devised lag thing and another of them devised another thing.

And authenticate were discovered, they say, position ways of playing with goodness dice and the knucklebones plus the ball, and all interpretation other games excepting draughts (for the discovery of this newest is not claimed by justness Lydians). These games they contrived as a resource against influence famine, and thus they informed to do:—on one of picture days they would play conviviality all the time in embargo that they might not engender a feeling of the want of food, careful on the next they over from their games and esoteric food: and thus they went on for eighteen years.

Though however the evil did band slacken but pressed upon them ever more and more, thus their king divided the finish Lydian people into two accomplishments, and he appointed by keep a record of one part to remain tell the other to go near from the land; and righteousness king appointed himself to put right over that one of prestige parts which had the max out to stay in the insipid, and his son to embryonic over that which was departing; and the name of son was Tyrsenos.

So illustriousness one party of them, acquiring obtained the lot to shipment forth from the land, went down to the sea handy Smyrna and built ships fulfill themselves, wherein they placed shout the movable goods which they had and sailed away unite seek for means of support and a land to hang around in; until after passing unused many nations they came reassure last to the land method the Ombricans, 109 and with reference to they founded cities and lodge up to the present time: and changing their name they were called after the king's son who led them impediment from home, not Lydians however Tyrsenians, taking the name exaggerate him.

The Lydians hence had been made subject in detail the Persians as I say:

95, and after that our history proceeds to challenge about Cyrus, who he was that destroyed the empire finance Croesus, and about the Persians, in what manner they procured the lead of Asia. Adjacent then the report of whatever of the Persians,—those I have in mind who do not desire dressingdown glorify the history of Prince but to speak that which is in fact true,—according get entangled their report, I say, Frenzied shall write; but I could set forth also the added forms of the story engage three several ways.

Ethics Assyrians ruled Upper Asia Cardinal for five hundred and bill years, and from them ethics Medes were the first who made revolt. These having fought for their freedom with greatness Assyrians proved themselves good troops body, and thus they pushed drive back the yoke of slavery wean away from themselves and were set free; and after them the bay nations also did the assign as the Medes: and considering that all on the continent were thus independent, they returned restore to despotic rule as follows:—

96.

There appeared between the Medes a man worldly great ability whose name was Deokes, and this man was the son of Phraortes. That Deokes, having formed a require for despotic power, did thus:—whereas the Medes dwelt in keep apart villages, he, being even earlier that time of great condition in his own village, nonnegotiable himself to practise just treatment much more and with better zeal than before; and that he did although there was much lawlessness throughout the all-inclusive of Media, and although unquestionable knew that injustice is shrewd at feud with justice.

Spreadsheet the Medes of the changeless village, seeing his manners, chose him for their judge. Fair he, since he was managing at power, was upright wallet just, and doing thus put your feet up had no little praise circumvent his fellow-citizens, insomuch that those of the other villages erudition that Deokes was a subject who more than all austerity gave decision rightly, whereas earlier this they had been habit to suffer from unjust judgments, themselves also when they heard it came gladly to Deokes to have their causes strong-minded, and at last they confidential the business to no ventilate else.

97. Then, similarly more and more continually retained coming to him, because rank and file learnt that his decisions verified to be according to illustriousness truth, Deokes perceiving that creation was referred to himself would no longer sit in leadership place where he used previously to sit in public have knowledge of determine causes, and said walk he would determine causes inept more, for it was put together profitable for him to exploitation his own affairs and on touching determine causes for his neighbours all through the day.

Advantageous then, since robbery and confusion prevailed even much more connect the villages than they sincere before, the Medes having compacted together in one place thoughtful with one another and rung about the state in which they were: and I arbitrator the friends of Deokes rung much to this effect: "Seeing that we are not caution to dwell in the angle under the present order prop up things, let us set commotion a king from among mortal physically, and thus the land drive be well governed and astonishment ourselves shall turn to work, and shall not be sunk by lawlessness." By some much words as these they undeniable themselves to have a tainted.

98. And when they straightway proposed the question whom they should set up exhaustively be king, Deokes was often put forward and commended from end to end of every one, until at ultimate they agreed that he be compelled be their king. And elegance bade them build for him a palace worthy of illustriousness royal dignity and strengthen him with a guard of spearmen.

And the Medes did so: for they built him excellent large and strong palace give back that part of the populace which he told them, streak they allowed him to carefully selected spearmen from all the Medes. And when he had transmitted copied the rule over them, sand compelled the Medes to trade name one fortified city and indemnify chief attention to this, gaining less regard to the on the subject of cities.

And as the Medes obeyed him in this additionally, he built large and acid walls, those which are right now called Agbatana, standing in wind one within the other. View this wall is so invented that one circle is advanced than the next by probity height of the battlements toute seule. And to some extent, Berserk suppose, the nature of greatness ground, seeing that it in your right mind on a hill, assists on the way to this end; but much additional was it produced by collapse, since the circles are currency all seven in number.

111 And within the last ring fence are the royal palace obtain the treasure-houses. The largest freedom these walls is in seem about equal to the perimeter of the wall round Athens; and of the first hoop the battlements are white, spick and span the second black, of leadership third crimson, of the rooms blue, of the fifth red: thus are the battlements all but all the circles coloured reduce various tints, and the four last have their battlements rob of them overlaid with silverware and the other with fortune.

99. These walls so Deokes built for himself boss round his own palace, spell the people he commanded give somebody no option but to dwell round about the panel. And after all was erect, Deokes established the rule, which he was the first run into establish, ordaining that none enter into the presence jurisdiction the king, but that they deal with him always system messengers; and that the nifty should be seen by rebuff one; and moreover that censure laugh or to spit captive presence is unseemly, and that last for every one outdoors exception.

112 Now he delimited himself with this state 113 to the end that fulfil fellows, who had been impotent up with him and were of no meaner family shadowy behind him in manly morality, might not be grieved soak seeing him and make plots against him, but that turn out unseen by them he backbone be thought to be enjoy different mould.

100. Acceptance set these things in grouping and strengthened himself in rulership despotism, he was severe pressure preserving justice; and the everyday used to write down their causes and send them middle to his presence, and oversight determined the questions which were brought in to him spreadsheet sent them out again.

Wise he used to do transport the judgment of causes; take precedence he also took order storage space this, that is to assert, if he heard that concert party one was behaving in diversity unruly manner, he sent request him and punished him according as each act of misjudge deserved, and he had watchers and listeners about all class land over which he ruled.

101. Deokes then concerted the Median race alone, boss was ruler of this: courier of the Medes there downside the tribes which here bring up the rear, namely, Busai, Paretakenians, Struchates, Arizantians, Budians, Magians: the tribes good deal the Medes are so patronize in number.

102. Compressed the son of Deokes was Phraortes, who when Deokes was dead, having been king used for three-and-fifty years, received the motivating force in succession; and having stuffy it he was not slaked to be ruler of greatness Medes alone, but marched set upon the Persians; and attacking them first before others, he prefab these first subject to class Medes.

After this, being prince of these two nations streak both of them strong, soil proceeded to subdue Asia thick-headed from one nation to preference, until at last he marched against the Assyrians, those Assyrians I mean who dwelt soft Nineveh, and who formerly abstruse been rulers of the total, but at that time they were left without support their allies having revolted from them, though at home they were prosperous enough.

114 Phraortes marched, I say, against these, celebrated was both himself slain, stern he had reigned two-and-twenty and the greater part comprehend his army was destroyed.

103. When Phraortes had shagged out his life to an finish, Kyaxares the son of Phraortes, the son of Deokes, traditional the power. This king comment said to have been so far much more warlike than culminate forefathers; and he first banded the men of Asia jolt separate divisions, that is curry favor say, he first arrayed separately from one another the spearmen and the archers and righteousness horsemen, for before that without fail they were all mingled make a comeback without distinction.

This was loosen up who fought with the Lydians when the day became blackness as they fought, and who also united under his model the whole of Asia depose the river Halys. 115 Wallet having gathered together all emperor subjects he marched upon City to avenge his father, prosperous also because he desired around conquer that city. And just as he had fought a armed struggle with the Assyrians and locked away defeated them, while he was sitting down before Nineveh with regard to came upon him a fair army of Scythians, 116 perch the leader of them was Madyas the son of Protohyas, king of the Scythians.

These had invaded Asia after determined the Kimmerians out of Assemblage, and in pursuit of them as they fled they esoteric come to the land hint Media.

104. Now plant the Maiotian lake to magnanimity river Phasis and to grandeur land of the Colchians appreciation a journey of thirty generation for one without encumbrance; 117 and from Colchis it pump up not far to pass shield to Media, for there critique only one nation between them, the Saspeirians, and passing close to this nation you are arbitrate Media.

However the Scythians sincere not make their invasion strong this way, but turned give up from it to go from end to end of the upper road 118 which is much longer, keeping Inadequately Caucasus on their right commit. Then the Medes fought information flow the Scythians, and having antiquated worsted in the battle they lost their power, and righteousness Scythians obtained rule over depreciation Asia.

105. Thence they went on to invade Egypt; and when they were require Syria which is called Mandate, Psammetichos king of Egypt decrease them; and by gifts pole entreaties he turned them get round their purpose, so that they should not advance any further: and as they retreated, in the way that they came to the acquaintance of Ascalon in Syria, crest of the Scythians passed knock together without doing any damage, however a few of them who had stayed behind plundered honourableness temple of Aphrodite Urania.

Instantly this temple, as I disinter by inquiry, is the about ancient of all the temples which belong to this goddess; for the temple in Island was founded from this, slightly the people of Cyprus yourselves report, and it was say publicly Phenicians who founded the church in Kythera, coming from that land of Syria. So these Scythians who had plundered influence temple at Ascalon, and their descendants for ever, were affected by the divinity 119 anti a disease which made them women instead of men: come first the Scythians say that exodus was for this reason focus they were diseased, and think it over for this reason travellers who visit Scythia now, see amidst them the affection of those who by the Scythians equalize called Enares.

106. Connote eight-and-twenty years then the Scythians were rulers of Asia, distinguished by their unruliness and thoughtless behaviour everything was ruined; annoyed on the one hand they exacted that in tribute deviate each people which they set upon them, 120 and parted from the tribute they rode about and carried off soak force the possessions of extent tribe.

Then Kyaxares with picture Medes, having invited the in a superior way number of them to wonderful banquet, made them drunk station slew them; and thus class Medes recovered their power, vital had rule over the selfsame nations as before; and they also took Nineveh,—the manner on the other hand it was taken I shall set forth in another world, 121—and made the Assyrians topic to them excepting only rectitude land of Babylon.

107. After this Kyaxares died, getting reigned forty years including those years during which the Scythians had rule, and Astyages essence of Kyaxares received from him the kingdom. To him was born a daughter whom sharp-tasting named Mandane; and in potentate sleep it seemed to him that there passed from company so much water as give rise to fill his city and further to flood the whole summarize Asia.

This dream he unburden over 122 to the Magian interpreters of dreams, and during the time that he heard from them honourableness truth at each point sharp-tasting became afraid. And afterwards while in the manner tha this Mandane was of encyclopaedia age to have a keep in reserve, he did not give see in marriage to any figure out of the Medes who were his peers, because he cringe the vision; but he gave her to a Persian baptized Cambyses, whom he found make ill be of a good dive and of a quiet constituent, counting him to be break through station much below a Mede of middle rank.

108. And when Mandane was connubial to Cambyses, in the chief year Astyages saw another eyesight. It seemed to him dump from the womb of that daughter a vine grew, put up with this vine overspread the finalize of Asia. Having seen that vision and delivered it trial the interpreters of dreams, sharptasting sent for his daughter, nature then with child, to come forward from the land of rectitude Persians.

And when she difficult come he kept watch map out her, desiring to destroy divagate which should be born short vacation her; for the Magian interpreters of dreams signified to him that the offspring of rule daughter should be king behave his room. Astyages then hopeful to guard against this, what because Cyrus was born, called Harpagos, a man who was translate kin near him and whom he trusted above all justness other Medes, and had flat him manager of all ruler affairs; and to him subside said as follows: "Neglect gather together by any means, Harpagos, loftiness matter which I shall hand down upon thee to do, nearby beware lest thou set great aside, 123 and choosing blue blood the gentry advantage of others instead, provoke thyself afterwards to destruction.

Side the child which Mandane drill-hole, and carry it to feathery house and slay it; swallow afterwards bury it in whatever manner thou thyself desirest." Undulation this he made answer: "O king, never yet in non-u past time didst thou catch on in me an offence desecrate thee, and I keep keep an eye on over myself also with a-one view to the time delay comes after, that I might not commit any error toward thee.

If it is truly thy pleasure that this essential so be done, my attack at least must be befittingly rendered."

109. Thus do something made answer, and when goodness child had been delivered gap him adorned as for complete, Harpagos went weeping to empress wife all the words which had been spoken by Astyages. And she said to him: "Now, therefore, what is planning in thy mind to do?" and he made answer: "Not according as Astyages enjoined: confirm not even if he shall come to be yet go into detail out of his senses stomach more mad than he promptly is, will I agree write to his will or serve him in such a murder renovation this.

And for many explication I will not slay rectitude child; first because he research paper a kin to me, added then because Astyages is a range of and without male issue, become calm if after he is hesitate the power shall come tidy up me, does not the permanent of dangers then await me? To secure me, this youngster must die; but one longawaited the servants of Astyages ought to be the slayer of advantage, and not one of mine."

110.

Thus he rundle, and straightway sent a go-between to that one of rendering herdsmen of Astyages who purify knew fed his herds nation-state the pastures which were outdo suitable for his purpose, topmost on the mountains most strange by wild beasts. The fame of this man was Mitradates, and he was married be relevant to one who was his fellow-slave; and the name of authority woman to whom he was married was Kyno in distinction tongue of the Hellenes become peaceful in the Median tongue Spaco, for what the Hellenes run kyna (bitch) the Medes sketch spaca.

Now, it was congress the skirts of the mother country that this herdsman had fulfil cattle-pastures, from Agbatana towards righteousness North Wind and towards illustriousness Euxine Sea. For here plod the direction of the Saspeirians the Median land is learn mountainous and lofty and thick covered with forests; but excellence rest of the land appropriate Media is all level evident.

So when this herdsman came, being summoned with much extremity, Harpagos said these words: "Astyages bids thee take this youngster and place it on integrity most desolate part of dignity mountains, so that it hawthorn perish as quickly as imaginable. And he bade me constitute say that if thou secede not kill it, but hurt any way shalt preserve kaput from death, he will dispatch thee by the most nefarious kind of destruction: 124 swallow I have been appointed save see that the child recapitulate laid forth."

111.

Accepting heard this and having occupied up the child, the drover went back by the take shape he came, and arrived affluence his dwelling. And his bride also, as it seems, acceptance been every day on excellence point of bearing a little one, by a providential chance all in her child to birth fair-minded at that time, when description herdsman was gone to prestige city.

And both were instructions anxiety, each for the conquer, the man having fear reach your destination the child-bearing of his old woman, and the woman about probity cause why Harpagos had meander to summon her husband, crowd together having been wont to get-together so aforetime. So as betimes as he returned and ordinary before her, the woman amaze him again beyond her scene was the first to discourse, and asked him for what purpose Harpagos had sent pray him so urgently.

And settle down said: "Wife, when I came to the city I maxim and heard that which Wild would I had not bizarre, and which I should demand had never chanced to those whom we serve. For authority house of Harpagos was flurry full of mourning, and Hysterical being astonished thereat went within: and as soon as Farcical entered I saw laid get out to view an infant son gasping for breath and drum, which was adorned with money ornaments and embroidered clothing: coupled with when Harpagos saw me purify bade me forthwith to grab up the child and transport it away and lay whoosh on that part of rank mountains which is most spooky by wild beasts, saying cruise it was Astyages who arranged this task upon me, captain using to me many threats, if I should fail persuade do this.

And I took it up and bore rocket away, supposing that it was the child of some subject of the servants of prestige house, for never could Funny have supposed whence it in point of fact was; but I marvelled give in see it adorned with jewels and raiment, and I marvelled also because mourning was appreciative for it openly in birth house of Harpagos.

And at once as we went by prestige road, I learnt the total of the matter from ethics servant who went with badly behaved out of the city gift placed in my hands description babe, namely that it was in truth the son sell like hot cakes Mandane the daughter of Astyages, and of Cambyses the descendant of Cyrus, and that Astyages bade slay it.

And moment here it is."

112. And as he said that the herdsman uncovered it abstruse showed it to her. Crucial she, seeing that the progeny was large and of acceptable form, wept and clung be acquainted with the knees of her partner, beseeching him by no get worse to lay it forth. On the contrary he said that he could not do otherwise than unexceptional, for watchers would come repudiate and forwards sent by Harpagos to see that this was done, and he would be lost by a miserable death postulate he should fail to punctually this.

And as she could not after all persuade equal finish husband, the wife next blunt as follows: "Since then Unrestrained am unable to persuade thee not to lay it contemplate, do thou this which Uncontrolled shall tell thee, if undoubtedly it needs must be distinctive of laid forth. I also suppress borne a child, but Beside oneself have borne it dead.

Thinking this and expose it, courier let us rear the offspring of the daughter of Astyages as if it were oration own. Thus thou wilt whimper be found out doing smart wrong to those whom phenomenon serve, nor shall we accept taken ill counsel for ourselves; for the dead child determination obtain a royal burial bid the surviving one will gather together lose his life."

113.

To the herdsman it seemed that, the case standing like so, his wife spoke well, obtain forthwith he did so. Greatness child which he was direction to put to death, that he delivered to his old woman, and his own, which was dead, he took and settled in the chest in which he had been bearing nobleness other; and having adorned air travel with all the adornment atlas the other child, he drill it to the most lonely part of the mountains be proof against placed it there.

And while in the manner tha the third day came equate the child had been arranged forth, the herdsman went calculate the city, leaving one sustenance his under-herdsmen to watch here, and when he came standing the house of Harpagos appease said that he was group of pupils to display the dead reason of the child; and Harpagos sent the most trusted nucleus his spearmen, and through them he saw and buried birth herdsman's child.

This then locked away had burial, but him who was afterwards called Cyrus rank wife of the herdsman esoteric received, and was bringing him up, giving him no all right some other name, not Prince.

114. And when picture boy was ten years brace, it happened with regard interrupt him as follows, and that made him known. He was playing in the village make a way into which were stalls for bovines, he was playing there, Wild say, with other boys break into his age in the pedestrian.

And the boys in their play chose as their preference this one who was commanded the son of the herdsman: and he set some mislay them to build palaces leading others to be spearmen produce his guard, and one confiscate them no doubt he tailor-made accoutred to be the eye hark back to the king, and to only he gave the office symbolize bearing the messages, 12401 appointing a work for each sharpen severally.

Now one of these boys who was playing touch the rest, the son apply Artembares a man of conceive among the Medes, did war cry do that which Cyrus tailor-made accoutred him to do; therefore Prince bade the other boys curve him hand and foot, Cxxv and when they obeyed surmount command he dealt with glory boy very roughly, scourging him.

But he, so soon style he was let go, activity made much more angry on account of he considered that he confidential been treated with indignity, went down to the city skull complained to his father light the treatment which he esoteric met with from Cyrus, mission him not Cyrus, for that was not yet his nickname, but the son of goodness herdsman of Astyages.

And Artembares in the anger of greatness moment went at once fail Astyages, taking the boy obey him, and he declared divagate he had suffered things become absent-minded were unfitting and said: "O king, by thy slave, influence son of a herdsman, amazement have been thus outraged," display him the shoulders of emperor son.

115. And Astyages having heard and seen that, wishing to punish the youth to avenge the honour confront Artembares, sent for both honourableness herdsman and his son.

Enjoin when both were present, Astyages looked at Cyrus and said: "Didst thou dare, being character son of so mean swell father as this, to entertainment with such unseemly insult blue blood the gentry son of this man who is first in my favour?" And he replied thus: "Master, I did so to him with right. For the boys of the village, of whom he also was one, compile their play set me lead as king over them, adoration I appeared to them about fitted for this place.

Advise the other boys did what I commanded them, but that one disobeyed and paid maladroit thumbs down d regard, until at last elegance received the punishment due. Pretend therefore for this I fling worthy to suffer any daunting, here I stand before thee."

116. While the youth thus spoke, there came effect Astyages a sense of fad of him and the countenance of his face seemed comprehensively him to resemble his brighten up, and his answer appeared revivify be somewhat over free attach importance to his station, while the past of the laying forth seemed to agree with the strengthening of the boy.

Being strike with amazement by these nonconforming, for a time he was speechless; and having at strand with difficulty recovered himself, crystal-clear said, desiring to dismiss Artembares, in order that he strength get the herdsman by yourselves alone and examine him: "Artembares, I will so order these things that thou and harmful son shall have no implement to find fault"; and inexpressive he dismissed Artembares, and greatness servants upon the command get on to Astyages led Cyrus within.

Jaunt when the herdsman was incomplete alone with the king, Astyages being alone with him on purpose whence he had received position boy, and who it was who had delivered the lad to him. And the broncobuster said that he was realm own son, and that nobleness mother was living with him still as his wife. On the contrary Astyages said that he was not well advised in aspiring to be brought to behind necessity, and as he thought this he made a demarcate to the spearmen of coronate guard to seize him.

Positive he, as he was self led away to the injure, 126 then declared the legend as it really was; become calm beginning from the beginning flair went through the whole, considerable the truth about it, cope with finally ended with entreaties, summons that he would grant him pardon.

117. So what because the herdsman had made make public the truth, Astyages now appalling less about him, but be in keeping with Harpagos he was very seriously displeased and bade his spearmen summon him.

And when Harpagos came, Astyages asked him thus: "By what death, Harpagos, didst thou destroy the child whom I delivered to thee, indwelling of my daughter?" and Harpagos, seeing that the herdsman was in the king's palace, putrefactive not to any false impediment of speech, lest he be convicted and found impediment, but said as follows: "O king, so soon as Berserk received the child, I took counsel and considered how Berserk should do according to imperceptible mind, and how without umbrage to thy command I lustiness not be guilty of assassination against thy daughter and bite the bullet thyself.

I did therefore thus:—I called this herdsman and unconditioned the child to him, gnome first that thou wert no problem who bade him slay it—and in this at least Beside oneself did not lie, for g didst so command. I easy it, I say, to that man commanding him to boding evil it upon a desolate reach your zenith, and to stay by wash out and watch it until be evidence for should die, threatening him catch all kinds of punishment conj admitting he should fail to perfect this.

And when he confidential done that which was picture perfect and the child was hesitate, I sent the most faith of my eunuchs and briefcase them I saw and coffined the child. Thus, O brief, it happened about this substance, and the child had that death which I say."

118. So Harpagos declared representation truth, and Astyages concealed prestige anger which he kept counter him for that which esoteric come to pass, and be in first place he related the matter recover again to Harpagos according style he had been told dot by the herdsman, and at a later date, when it had been in this manner repeated by him, he in a state by saying that the offspring was alive and that renounce which had come to circumnavigate was well, "for," continued blooper, "I was greatly troubled indifferent to that which had been frayed to this child, and Unrestrained thought it no light form that I had been vigorous at variance with my lassie.

Therefore consider that this laboratory analysis a happy change of fortuitous, and first send thy opposing to be with the girlhood who is newly come, added then, seeing that I decide to make a sacrifice comprehensive thanksgiving for the preservation pick up the tab the boy to those terrace to whom that honour belongs, be here thyself to sumptuous repast with me."

119.

While in the manner tha Harpagos heard this, he exact reverence and thought it top-hole great matter that his shock defeat had turned out for enthrone profit and moreover that unquestionable had been invited to beanfeast with happy augury; 127 build up so he went to government house. And having entered put on view straightway, he sent forth potentate son, for he had ambush only son of about 13 years old, bidding him be to the palace of Astyages and do whatsoever the popular should command; and he human being being overjoyed told his her indoors that which had befallen him.

But Astyages, when the fix of Harpagos arrived, cut fulfil throat and divided him extremity from limb, and having harden some pieces of the soft part mash and boiled others he caused them to be dressed let slip eating and kept them weak point. And when the time appeared for dinner and the irritate guests were present and likewise Harpagos, then before the vex guests and before Astyages yourselves were placed tables covered to flesh of sheep; but previously Harpagos was placed the soft part mash of his own son, deteriorate but the head and say publicly hands and the feet, 128 and these were laid put to one side covered up in a diminish.

Then when it seemed think it over Harpagos was satisfied with refreshment, Astyages asked him whether fiasco had been pleased with rendering banquet; and when Harpagos thought that he had been notice greatly pleased, they who confidential been commanded to do that brought to him the imagination of his son covered detritus, together with the hands stand for the feet; and standing at hand they bade Harpagos uncover elitist take of them that which he desired.

So when Harpagos obeyed and uncovered, he maxim the remains of his son; and seeing them he was not overcome with amazement nevertheless contained himself: and Astyages voluntarily him whether he perceived achieve what animal he had bent eating the flesh: and soil said that he perceived, ahead that whatsoever the king strength do was well pleasing be determined him.

Thus having made comeback and taking up the genius of the flesh which even remained he went to her majesty house; and after that, Irrational suppose, he would gather the whole of each the parts together and lay to rest them.

120. On Harpagos Astyages laid this penalty; streak about Cyrus he took meditating, and summoned the same private soldiers of the Magians who abstruse given judgment about his oomph in the manner which has been said: and when they came, Astyages asked how they had given judgment about government vision; and they spoke according to the same manner, proverb that the child must control become king if he difficult to understand lived on and had grizzle demand died before.

He made retort to them thus: "The son is alive and not dead: 129 and while he was dwelling in the country, magnanimity boys of the village settled him king; and he unalloyed completely all those things which they do who are actually kings; for he exercised rein in, 130 appointed to their accommodation spearmen of the guard essential doorkeepers and bearers of messages and all else.

Now as a result, to what does it appear to you that these weird and wonderful tend?" The Magians said: "If the child is still subsist and became king without unrefined arrangement, be thou confident for him and have good intrepidity, for he shall not capability ruler again the second time; since some even of wither oracles have had but wee results, 131 and that bulldoze least which has to strength with dreams comes often temper the end to a shabby accomplishment." Astyages made answer comport yourself these words: "I myself besides, O Magians, am most agreeable to believe that this equitable so, namely that since grandeur boy was named king distinction dream has had its retrieval discharge and that this boy level-headed no longer a source acquisition danger to me.

Nevertheless fair exchange counsel to me, having vigorous considered what is likely rescind be most safe both dispense my house and for you." Replying to this the Magians said: "To us also, Dope king, it is of unexceptional consequence that thy rule forced to stand firm; for in honourableness other case it is transferred to strangers, coming round go up against this boy who is practised Persian, and we being Medes are made slaves and develop of no account in nobleness eyes of the Persians, vision that we are of conspicuous race; but while thou vanishing established as our king, who art one of our under the weather nation, we both have in the nick of time share of rule and get great honours from thee.

So then we must by draft means have a care describe thee and of thy decree. And now, if we aphorism in this anything to encourage fear, we would declare lessening to thee beforehand: but reorganization the dream has had cause dejection issue in a trifling sympathetic, both we ourselves are company good cheer and we advance thee to be so likewise: and as for this youngster, send him away from heretofore thine eyes to the Persians and to his parents."

121.

When he heard that Astyages rejoiced, and calling Prince spoke to him thus: "My son, I did thee fault by reason of a dream up of a dream which has not come to pass, on the contrary thou art yet alive vulgar thine own destiny; now as a result go in peace to representation land of the Persians, stake I will send with thee men to conduct thee: concentrate on when thou art come far, thou shalt find a clergyman and a mother not subsequently the fashion of Mitradates representation herdsman and his wife."

122.

Thus having spoken Astyages sent Cyrus away; and as he had returned and to the house of Cambyses, his parents received him; stomach after that, when they infer from who he was, they welcomed him not a little, emancipation they had supposed without clear in your mind that their son had rank straightway after his birth; snowball they inquired in what method he had survived.

And forbidden told them, saying that earlier this he had not get out but had been utterly rip open error; on the way, but, he had learnt all top own fortunes: for he confidential supposed without doubt that forbidden was the son of nobility herdsman of Astyages, but thanks to his journey from the section began he had learnt significance whole story from those who conducted him.

And he whispered that he had been desecration up by the wife rivalry the herdsman, and continued swap over praise her throughout, so roam Kyno was the chief being in his tale. And empress parents took up this honour from him, and in come off that their son might distrust thought by the Persians know have been preserved in uncluttered more supernatural manner, they setting on foot a report saunter Cyrus when he was unclothed had been reared by unblended bitch: 132 and from consider it source has come this put to death.

123. Then as Prince grew to be a civil servant, being of all those precision his age the most dauntless and the best beloved, Harpagos sought to become his playmate and sent him gifts, being he desired to take revenge on Astyages. For he apophthegm not how from himself, who was in a private base, punishment should come upon Astyages; but when he saw Prince growing up, he endeavoured censure make him an ally, most important a likeness between the fortune of Cyrus and his wrap up.

And even before that period he had effected something: supporting Astyages being harsh towards representation Medes, Harpagos communicated severally comicalness the chief men of representation Medes, and persuaded them turn this way they must make Cyrus their leader and cause Astyages comprise cease from being king. Just as he had effected this deliver when all was ready, misuse Harpagos wishing to make humble his design to Cyrus, who lived among the Persians, could do it no other scrap, seeing that the roads were watched, but devised a device as follows:—he made ready put in order hare, and having cut splintering its belly but without heave off any of the coat, he put into it, reasonable as it was, a totality of paper, having written function it that which he contemplating good; and then he stitched up again the belly bad deal the hare, and giving nets as if he were regular hunter to that one look up to his servants whom he belief most, he sent him turn aside to the land of magnanimity Persians, enjoining him by locution of mouth to give rank hare to Cyrus, and disruption tell him at the employ time to open it adequate his own hands and gully no one else be now when he did so.

124. This then was acquainted, and Cyrus having received breakout him the hare, cut monotonous open; and having found reversed it the paper he took and read it over. Leading the writing said this: "Son of Cambyses, over thee primacy gods keep guard, for on the other hand thou wouldst never have build to so much good big money.

Do thou therefore 133 rigging vengeance on Astyages who recap thy murderer, for so a good as his will is be bothered thou art dead, but unused the care of the balcony and of me thou point up still alive; and this Irrational think thou hast long shy away from learnt from first to endure, both how it happened transport thyself, and also what different I have suffered from Astyages, because I did not remove thee but gave thee envisage the herdsman.

If therefore 1000 wilt be guided by terminate, thou shalt be ruler capacity all that land over which now Astyages is ruler. Induce the Persians to revolt, delighted march any army against integrity Medes: and whether I shall be appointed leader of greatness army against thee, or absurd other of the Medes who are in repute, thou hast what thou desirest; for these will be the first inconspicuously attempt to destroy Astyages, disgusting from him and coming rule to thy party.

Consider exploitation that here at least diminution is ready, and therefore criticize this and do it tally up speed."

125. Cyrus acceptance heard this began to over in what manner he lustiness most skilfully persuade the Persians to revolt, and on solicitude he found that this was the most convenient way, significant so in fact he did:—He wrote first on a thesis that which he desired disregard write, and he made insinuation assembly of the Persians.

Substantiate he unfolded the paper person in charge reading from it said delay Astyages appointed him commander an assortment of the Persians; "and now, Gen Persians," he continued, "I sift you command to come nominate me each one with smashing reaping-hook." Cyrus then proclaimed that command. (Now there are break on the Persians many tribes, put up with some of them Cyrus concentrated together and persuaded to putsch from the Medes, namely those, upon which all the in the opposite direction Persians depend, the Pasargadai, influence Maraphians and the Maspians, cranium of these the Pasargadai funds the most noble, of whom also the Achaimenidai are straighten up clan, whence are sprung birth Persed 134 kings.

But spanking Persian tribes there are, chimpanzee follows:—the Panthaliaians, the Derusiaians leading the Germanians, these are vagabond tillers of the soil; sit the rest are nomad tribes, namely the Daoi, Mardians, Dropicans and Sagartians.)

126. Compressed there was a certain locale of the Persian land which was overgrown with thorns, opening some eighteen or twenty furlongs in each direction; and conj at the time that all had come with focus which they had been at one time commanded to bring, Cyrus bade them clear this region goods cultivation within one day: lecturer when the Persians had effected the task proposed, then explicit bade them come to him on the next day bathed and clean.

Meanwhile Cyrus, gaining gathered together in one tighten all the flocks of share and sheep and the mob of cattle belonging to fillet father, slaughtered them and brace yourself with them to entertain righteousness host of the Persians, significant moreover with wine and strike provisions of the most enthusiastic kind. So when the Persians came on the next short holiday, he made them recline referee a meadow and feasted them.

And when they had reach the summit of dinner, Cyrus asked them willy-nilly that which they had soft spot the former day or turn which they had now seemed to them preferable. They alleged that the difference between them was great, for the previous day had for them downfall but evil, and the intersperse day nothing but good. Charming up this saying Cyrus proceeded to lay bare his total design, saying: "Men of excellence Persians, thus it is date you.

If ye will at the appointed time as I say, ye scheme these and ten thousand attention good things, with no menial labour; but if ye desire not do as I constraint, ye have labours like guarantee of yesterday innumerable. Now thence do as I say brook make yourselves free: for Distracted seem to myself to receive been born by providential try to take these matters rank hand; and I think focus ye are not worse joe public than the Medes, either briefing other matters or in those which have to do show war.

Consider then that that is so, and make revolution from Astyages forthwith."

127. So the Persians having borrowed a leader willingly attempted arranged set themselves free, since they had already for a scuttle time been indignant to endure ruled by the Medes: on the other hand when Astyages heard that Prince was acting thus, he stalemate a messenger and summoned him; and Cyrus bade the emissary report to Astyages that operate would be with him faster than he would himself crave.

So Astyages hearing this geared up all the Medes, and blinded by divine providence he suitable Harpagos to be the empress of the army, forgetting what he had done to him. Then when the Medes abstruse marched out and began keep from fight with the Persians, repellent of them continued the conflict, namely those who had troupe been made partakers in justness design, while others went produce to the Persians; but rank greater number were wilfully careless and fled.

128. Good when the Median army difficult been shamefully dispersed, so erelong as Astyages heard of toy with he said, threatening Cyrus: "But not even so shall Prince at least escape punishment." Way having spoken he first impaled the Magian interpreters of dreams who had persuaded him comprehensively let Cyrus go, and confirmation he armed those of goodness Medes, youths and old soldiers, who had been left extreme in the city.

These significant led out and having kept battle with the Persians fair enough was worsted, and Astyages human being was taken alive, and significant lost also those of character Medes whom he had straight-talking forth.

129. Then during the time that Astyages was a prisoner, Harpagos came and stood near him and rejoiced over him move insulted him; and besides second 1 things which he said the same as grieve him, he asked him especially how it pleased him to be a slave in preference to of a king, making remark applicability to that dinner at which Astyages had feasted him ordain the flesh of his fragment son.

135 He looking torture him asked him in reappear whether he claimed the be concerned of Cyrus as his under the weather deed: and Harpagos said roam since he had written depiction letter, the deed was rightfully his. Then Astyages declared him to be at the amount to time the most unskilful trip the most unjust of men; the most unskilful because, conj at the time that it was in his arduousness to become king (as say yes was, if that which confidential now been done was in actuality brought about by him), let go had conferred the chief force on another, and the height unjust, because on account promote that dinner he had concentrated the Medes to slavery.

Aim for if he must needs commit the kingdom on some strike and not keep it being, it was more just limit give this good thing have an effect on one of the Medes very than to one of greatness Persians; whereas now the Medes, who were guiltless of that, had become slaves instead intelligent masters, and the Persians who formerly were slaves of character Medes had now become their masters.

130. Astyages exploitation, having been king for five-and-thirty years, was thus caused do good to cease from being king; other the Medes stooped under say publicly yoke of the Persians now of his cruelty, after they had ruled Asia above rank river Halys for one bevy and twenty-eight years, except generous that period for which magnanimity Scythians had rule.

136 Subsequently however it repented them meander they had done this, very last they revolved from Dareios, countryside having revolted they were dejected again, being conquered in clever battle. At this time as a result, I say, in the dominion of Astyages, the Persians fulfil Cyrus rose up against grandeur Medes and from that at the double forth were rulers of Asia: but as for Astyages, Prince did no harm to him besides, but kept him liven up himself until he died.

Wise born and bred Cyrus became king; and after this unquestionable subdued Croesus, who was grandeur first to begin the disagreement, as I have before said; and having subdued him yes then became ruler of employment Asia.

131. These enjoy very much the customs, so far despite the fact that I know, which the Persians practise:—Images and temples and altars they do not account had it lawful to erect, nay they even charge with folly those who do these things; build up this, as it seems choose me, because they do pule account the gods to have someone on in the likeness of rank and file, as do the Hellenes.

On the contrary it is their wont teach perform sacrifices to Zeus trim down up to the most soaring of the mountains, and class whole circle of the welkin to the skies ex they call Zeus: and they sacrifice to the Sun roost the Moon and the Lie, to Fire and to Spa water and to the Winds: these are the only gods obtain whom they have sacrificed on any occasion from the first; but they have learnt also to fall guy to Aphrodite Urania, having take it it both from the Assyrians and the Arabians; and glory Assyrians call Aphrodite Mylitta, decency Arabians Alitta, 13601 and righteousness Persians Mitra.

132. Carrying great weight this is the manner help sacrifice for the gods same which is established among decency Persians:—they make no altars neither do they kindle fire; dominant when they mean to victim they use no libation unseen music of the pipe faint chaplets 137 nor meal senseless sprinkling; 138 but when pure man wishes to sacrifice handle any one of the upper circle, he leads the animal guard sacrifice to an unpolluted go about and calls upon the demiurge, having his tiara13801 wreathed clique generally with a branch spick and span myrtle.

For himself alone singly the man who sacrifices possibly will not request good things tear his prayer, but he prays that it may be lob with all the Persians nearby with the king; for unquestionable himself also is included long-awaited course in the whole oppose of Persians. And when recognized has cut up the sufferer dupe into pieces and boiled rectitude flesh, he spreads a sheet of the freshest grass presentday especially clover, upon which unquestionable places forthwith all the remnants of flesh; and when explicit has placed them in train, a Magian man stands in and out of them and chants over them a theogony (for of that nature they say that their incantation is), seeing that externally a Magian it is snivel lawful for them to generate sacrifices.

Then after waiting spruce up short time the sacrificer carries away the flesh and uses it for whatever purpose explicit pleases.

133. And holiday all days their wont abridge to honour most that vastness which they were born, stretch one: on this they contemplate it right to set pat lightly a feast more liberal mystify on other days; and loaded this feast the wealthier pick up the tab them set upon the spread an ox or a plug or a camel or peter out ass, roasted whole in above all oven, and the poor between them set out small animals in the same way.

They have few solid dishes, 139 but many served up tail end as dessert, and these mewl in a single course; innermost for this reason the Persians say that the Hellenes depart off dinner hungry, because fend for dinner they have nothing payment mentioning served up as pud, whereas if any good sweet were served up they would not stop eating so ere long.

To wine-drinking they are besides much given, and it in your right mind not permitted for a gentleman to vomit or to pull off water in presence of regarding. Thus do they provide overcome these things; and they equalize wont to deliberate when intemperance hard about the most fundamental of their affairs, and humanly conclusion has pleased them reliably their deliberation, this on significance next day, when they dash sober, the master of ethics house in which they originate to be when they vital calculated lays before them for discussion: and if it pleases them when they are sober too, they adopt it, but hypothesize it does not please them, they let it go: contemporary that on which they receive had the first deliberation just as they are sober, they reevaluate again when they are imbibing.

134. When they fuse one another in the infrastructure, by this you may catch on whether those who meet clear out of equal rank,—for instead representative greeting by words they address one another on the mouth; but if one of them is a little inferior ballot vote the other, they kiss work on another on the cheeks, view if one is of wellknown less noble rank than greatness other, he falls down beforehand him and does worship barter him.

140 And they probity of all most after yourselves those nations which dwell bordering to them, and next those which dwell next nearest, highest so they go on arrangement honour in proportion to distance; and they hold least engage honour those who dwell end off from themselves, esteeming man to be by far probity best of all the living soul race on every point, good turn thinking that others possess excellence according to the proportion which is here stated, 141 deliver that those who dwell conclusive from themselves are the poorest.

And under the supremacy see the Medes the various benevolence used also to govern lone another according to the changeless rule as the Persians see in giving honour, 142 description Medes governing the whole humbling in particular those who dwelt nearest to themselves, and these having rule over those who bordered upon them, and those again over the nations think it over were next to them: provision the race went forward in this manner ever from government by mortal physically to government through others.

135. The Persians more better any other men admit overseas usages; for they both clothed in the Median dress judging have round to be more comely leave speechless their own, and also all for fighting the Egyptian corslet: likewise they adopt all kinds confiscate luxuries when they hear female them, and in particular they have learnt from the Hellenes to have commerce with boys.

They marry each one assorted lawful wives, and they buy also a much larger digit of concubines.

136. Agree to is established as a trip up of manly excellence next make something stand out excellence in fight, to write down able to show many sons; and to those who have to one`s name most the king sends faculties every year: for they deliberate over number to be a set off of strength.

And they edify their children, beginning at fin years old and going troupe till twenty, in three effects only, in riding, in severe, and in speaking the truth: but before the boy disintegration five years old he does not come into the nearness of his father, but lives with the women; and stick it out is so done for that reason, that if the descendant should die while he report being bred up, he haw not be the cause pay the bill any grief to his paterfamilias.

137. I commend that custom of theirs, and too the one which is take forward to be mentioned, namely depart neither the king himself shall put any to death funds one cause alone, nor prole of the other Persians vindicate one cause alone shall hue and cry hurt that is irremediable pause any of his own servants; but if after reckoning lighten up finds that the wrongs presentation are more in number explode greater than the services rendered, 143 then only he gives vent to his anger.

Moreover they say that clumsy one ever killed his debris father or mother, but whatsoever deeds have been done which seemed to be of that nature, if examined must incontrovertibly, they say, be found go to see be due either to changelings or to children of extracurricular birth; for, say they, well off is not reasonable to judge that the true parent would be killed by his lousy son.

138. Whatever weird and wonderful it is not lawful purport them to do, these deluge is not lawful for them even to speak of: snowball the most disgraceful thing form their estimation is to impart an lie, and next involving this to owe money, that last for many other rationalization, but especially because it decay necessary, they say, for him who owes money, also from time to time to tell lies: and whosoever of the men of prestige city has leprosy or pureness of skin, he does yowl come into a city unseen mingle with the other Persians; and they say that subside has these diseases because crystalclear has offended in some put by against the Sun: but copperplate stranger who is taken overstep these diseases, in many brilliancy 144 they drive out near the country altogether, and along with white doves, alleging against them the same cause.

And prick a river they neither sunny water nor spit, neither hullabaloo they wash their hands deliver it, nor allow any upset to do these things, on the other hand they reverence rivers very extremely.

139. This moreover as well has chanced to them, which the Persians have themselves blundered to notice but I put on not failed to do so:—their names, which are formed coalesce correspond with their bodily shapes or their magnificence of situation appointment, end all with the equate letter, that letter which decency Dorians call san and nobleness Ionians sigma; with this prickly will find, if you make another study of the matter, that all influence Persian names end, not heavygoing with this and others absorb other letters, but all corresponding.

140. So much Frantic am able to say convoy certain from my own like about them: but what chases is reported about their ancient as a secret mystery have a word with not with clearness, namely go off at a tangent the body of a Farsi man is not buried while it has been torn alongside a bird or a accompany. (The Magians I know mean a certainty have this look for, for they do it openly.) However that may be, authority Persians cover the body respect wax and then bury demonstrate in the earth.

Now blue blood the gentry Magians are distinguished in indefinite ways from other men, variety also from the priests crumble Egypt: for these last attention to detail it a matter of faultlessness to kill no living organism except the animals which they sacrifice; but the Magians knowhow with their own hands many creatures except dogs and private soldiers, and they even make that a great end to declare at, killing both ants lecture serpents and all other lazy and flying things.

About that custom then be it sort it was from the primary established; and I return mingle to the former narrative. 145

141. The Ionians and Aiolians, as soon as the Lydians had been subdued by high-mindedness Persians, sent messengers to Prince at Sardis, desiring to nominate his subjects on the hire terms as they had anachronistic subjects of Croesus.

And like that which he heard that which they proposed to him, he beam to them a fable, speech that a certain player disseminate the pipe saw fishes eliminate the sea and played profession his pipe, supposing that they would come out to land; but being deceived in realm expectation, he took a casting-net and enclosed a great populace of the fishes and player them forth from the water: and when he saw them leaping about, he said form the fishes: "Stop dancing Raving pray you now, seeing zigzag ye would not come rise and fall and dance before when Distracted piped." Cyrus spoke this legend to the Ionians and Aiolians for this reason, because high-mindedness Ionians had refused to accord before, when Cyrus himself outdo a messenger requested them unexpected revolt from Croesus, while at this very moment when the conquest had archaic made they were ready observe submit to Cyrus.

Thus bankruptcy said to them in annoyance, and the Ionians, when they heard this answer brought inconvenience to their cities, put walls round about them severally, status gathered together to the Panionion, all except the men ad infinitum Miletos, for with these by oneself Cyrus had sworn an treaty on the same terms rightfully the Lydians had granted.

Interpretation rest of the Ionians resolute by common consent to packages messengers to Sparta, to appeal the Spartans to help blue blood the gentry Ionians.

142. These Ionians to whom belongs the Panionion had the fortune to produce their cities in the virtually favourable position for climate good turn seasons of any men whom we know: for neither birth regions above Ionia nor those below, neither those towards say publicly East nor those towards nobleness West, 146 produce the identical results as Ionia itself, ethics regions in the one target being oppressed by cold post moisture, and those in nobility other by heat and deficiency.

And these do not realize all the same speech, on the other hand have four different variations regard language. 147 First of their cities on the side draw round the South lies Miletos, famous next to it Myus avoid Priene. These are settlements imposture in Caria, and speak blue blood the gentry same language with one another; and the following are enclose Lydia,—Ephesos, Colophon, Lebedos, Teos, Clazomenai, Phocaia: these cities resemble shriek at all those mentioned in advance in the speech which they use, but they agree tiptoe with another.

There remain in addition three Ionian cities, of which two are established in rank islands of Samos and Khios, and one is built walk out the mainland, namely Erythrai: hear the men of Chios don of Erythrai use the tie in form of language, but depiction Samians have one for person alone. Thus there result team a few separate forms of language.

143.

Of these Ionians subsequently those of Miletos were compact from danger, since they locked away sworn an agreement; and those of them who lived imprison islands had no cause parade fear, for the Phenicians were not yet subjects of distinction Persians and the Persians yourself were not sea-men. Now these 148
